WASILLA — The Alaska Avalanche have traded captain J.C. Richardson to Marquette for future considerations. The move was announced Friday on the North American Hockey League’s Web site.

With his team on a holiday break, Avalanche head coach Jamie Smith said Saturday said it “was time” for Richardson to move on.

“We weren’t getting a lot of production out of him,” Smith said.

In his two seasons with Alaska, the Fort Collins, Colo. defenseman was a steady presence on Alaska’s blue line, skating in more games (92) than any other Alaska player during that span. Richardson played in all 62 games last season and missed only one contest this year.

But the stay-at-home defenseman scored just four points in that time, and his plus/minus rating this season had dropped to minus-13 — tied for worst on the team.

Smith said he has a player in mind to replace Richardson as the team captain, but won’t announce the decision until the team returns to practice later this week.

The coach also hinted that the team will be on the lookout for defensive help to replace the departing Richardson.

The Avalanche begin an 11-game road trip Friday with a visit to Fairbanks before leaving the state for a swing through Texas and Kansas that Smith called “make or break” for his fourth-place team.

The top four teams in each division reach the NAHL playoffs. Alaska is currently eight points in front of Kenai River for the final playoff spot in the South Division. Sixth-place Texas is 11 points back, but Smith noted that the Frisco-based team has made several moves in recent days to bolster its roster.

Alaska will face Texas three times during the upcoming road trip.

The Avs are set to return to Wasilla Feb. 13 for a 12-game homestand.

" The trade obviously didn't help as they were beaten on Friday and Saturday night by the Witchita Falls Wildcats. Wonder who Smith will blame for the losses and trade now? "

" I really hope they didnt get rid of JC for nothing. Future considerations is about as good as 6 rolls of white tape and a set of water bottles. Just because a player asks for a trade doesn't mean you should give them away. I wonder if any team would even take kincaid, i think mcdonalds might take him. "

" Coach Smith has done nothing but take responsibility for this team. I commend the move of last years players that were selfish and were not willing to buy into a philosophy of team play. Smith has shouldered and taken responsibility for this organization, he is the only reason Jr. A Hockey is up and running in the Mat-Su Valley. Remember folks he is one of the top two winningest coaches in the State of Alaska at all levels and you don't accomplish this by not having any backbone or having any ability to motivate. Good Job Jamie "

" Production from players is not something coaches can always produce. No different than you armchair quarterbacks making plays for a game. You have no control. Jamie knows if a player isnt producing to try other methods and practice. But the next step is to move them on and get someone else. He has a whole team to improve and thats how junior hockey is. If you dont like it, then go back to playing your playstation and you can make your own decisions. Jamie cant just pause the game like you can.

Good job Jamie and valley hockey! "

" JC and Kinkaid. Two players tied with a -13. You can't blame a coach for that. JC had no heart for the game any more, didn't want to mix it up with the opposing offense, refused to make contact on the backside. And his turnovers on defense continued to cause headaches. Kinkaid, running around with his sunglasses on like he is a rock star has no desire to get any better and is a constant distraction. Both players were the only ones who completely blew off their mid season interviews. No wonder one gone and the other on the wire. "

" “We weren’t getting a lot of production out of him,” Smith said. The Coach continues to blame players and doesn't take any of the responsibility. What's next, blame the referees and start trading them out? Blame the fans and start hauling others in from Anchorage or Denver? Smith either can't or won't motivate his team AND has no spine. I'm more disappointed with the coach than I am the team. "
