Colony squads ranked in first poll

MAT-SU — A trio of local teams are ranked in the first Alaska Sportswriters Prep Basketball Poll of the 2007-08 season.

The Colony Knights received 33 total votes and one first-place vote to be ranked second in the girls 4A poll, released Wednesday by the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. The Knights are 5-1 this season, and earned their fifth straight win with a victory over West Valley last week. The Knights are in Juneau today to start a two-game series against Juneau-Douglas (7-4), the fourth-ranked team in the girls’ class.

Palmer (6-3) is third in the girls poll with 16 points.

The Moose sandwiched a win over West Valley with losses to Valley foes Colony and Wasilla within the last wwek.

Chugiak (7-0) received 39 total points and seven first-place votes. Another Northern Lights Conference squad, Kenai, slipped into the girls’ poll at fifth.

In the boys’ class, Colony is the lone Valley school to be ranked. The Knights (6-1) are third after receiving 18 total points.

Unbeaten Ketchikan (11-0) is first. The Kings are fresh off a two-game sweep of Wasilla at Ketchikan High School.

Here is this week’s Alaska Sportswriters Pep Basketball Poll for Class 4A teams with best available overall records through Jan. 20, first place votes in parenthesis and total points based on a 5-4-3-2-1 system.

Boys 4A Poll

1. Ketchikan, 11-0 (5) 35

3. Colony, 6-1 18

4. South Anchorage, 6-1 14

5. Kenai, 8-1 8

1. Chugiak, 7-0 (7) 39

2. Colony, 5-1 (1) 33

3. Palmer, 6-2 16

4. Juneau-Douglas, 7-4 13

5. Kenai, 5-3 10
