Warrior girls fall in first round of tourney

ANCHORAGE — The South Anchorage Wolverines slipped past the Wasilla Warriors 43-38, during the first round of the Lady Lynx Prep Shootout at Dimond High School on Thursday in Anchorage.

Wasilla held a 12-10 lead after the first quarter, but the South defense held the Warriors to just 24 percent shooting in the game.

Junior Jenna Johnson led the Warriors with a game-high 22 in the loss. Johnson also collected eight rebounds and six steals.

Senior Shelby Fulton added five for WHS.

Allison Horazdovsky, a transfer from Homer High School, led South with 19 points.

With the loss, Wasilla moves to the consolation side of the bracket and will meet West Valley today at 2:45 p.m. at Dimond High.

Four Valley squads ranked

MAT-SU — Four Valley programs are ranked in the latest Alaska Sportswriters Prep Basketball Poll.

Three of those squads are listed in the 4A girls’ class.

Colony, 7-2 and fresh off a nonconference win over East Anchorage, is second in the 4A girls’ class. The Knights received 27 total points and one first-place vote.

Behind Colony is Wasilla (9-4) in third and Palmer (8-3) in fourth.

The Warriors are currently competing in the Lady Lynx Prep Shootout in Anchorage, and the Moose are off this weekend.

Chugiak (9-0), is ranked first for the second consecutive week.

Colony is ranked third in the boys 4A poll. The Knights (8-1) received 20 total points.

Dimond (13-1) is the top team in the 4A boys’ class.

Hawks fall in Interior

NORTH POLE — The Houston Hawks suffered a 6-2 loss to the North Pole Patriots at the Polar Ice Arena in North Pole on Wednesday.

After the Pats skated to a 6-0 lead, the Hawks scored a pair of power-play goals in the third period.

Dillon Styers and Joe VanHyning each scored with the man advantage during the final frame. Styers, Micah Ranum and Tim Scates each logged assists.

Will Rauchenstein stopped 33 North Pole shots.
