Do you trust MEA?

I was appalled when I read Tuckerman Babcock’s defense of why the Matanuska Electric Association ballot packet wouldn’t contain any information about the proposed bylaw change except for the bylaws committee’s recommendation that it be rejected.

After all, why would anyone want to know why all these people worked to petition to change the bylaws in the first place? Shouldn’t we all just take Babcock’s word for it?

MEA is using our member dollars to tell us not to vote for something that got more than 620 signatures on a petition in just a few days when only 300 were needed. It wants us vote down something that to so many just makes sense. They are using our money (again) to advertise to us about how we really should all be good and vote the way MEA management tells us.

Babcock says that amending the bylaws to seat board members within 15 days of election will “hurt the association.”  How? We used to do it in three days for decades and did just fine. How will seating the elected board members in a reasonable time hurt our association?

Babcock says MEA has a fiduciary responsibility and that’s why only one side of the story can be told to members. The fiduciary relationship, above all, is one of good faith, loyalty and trust. Are you feeling the good faith, loyalty and trust here?

" MEA seems most interested in expensive full page ads denouncing whoever the enemy of the day seems to be whether it is the IBEW,Chugach Electric or the anti-coal crowd. They seem to be plagued by scandal continuosly and their cavaleir contempt of the public is really sad. When I go in their Palmer office the amosphere seems tense. The employees act disinterested and beaten down.MEA is a total mess.At MTA the atmosphere is upbeat and the employees actually seem to care about the public they serve. Both are co-ops,why the big difference? " Why should anyone think that Janet Kincaid is such a great choice? The union was a good thing for her, since her husband was in the IBEW. But, when her hotel employees considered unionizing (health care and better wages)...all of a sudden the financial situation would not support that kind of expense. Next thing you know some employees were no longer there!

" The folks at MEA work hard to keep the lights on... The jokers bullying projects at ratepayers expense are in the head office. We don't trust them. A pat on the back for all the linemen and women.
Burchell and Kinkaid are to be trusted to look out for our interests. And when you eventually get seated, please consider cleaning house! "

Time for Change at MEA wrote on Feb 11, 2008 10:13 AM:

" Actually, I wish the bylaw change called for seating the new board members immediately, but 15 days is better than waiting four months. I have absolutely no trust of the old guard at MEA and fear the damage they could wreck both covering their tracks of corruption and still pushing their agenda months after members have voted to oust these clowns. Peter Burchell and Janet Kincaid are our last best hope for cleaning up the mess at MEA. "

" MEA sure has spent a lot of money the last few years fighting battles instead of running a utility. Seems like they are doing this without board approval in many instances. What else goes on over there that the board and coop members don't know about? We need a board unified to look out for the members best interests. Peter Burchell has saved hundreds of students in his career. They might not of graduated if he had not been there. I trust him at MEA. "

" I have attended MEA meetings, and watched their actions closely. Having done so causes me to have no trust for Carmony, Babbcock, Lee Jordan, and Ms. Lorali. None. Nada. Zip. They have wasted coop member money in attempts to advance their personal interests at our expense and detriment.

Our best hope is to support Peter Burchell and Janet Kinkaid, and give them our full support in the next MEA election. Let's come together as a coop, and look our for our best interests this time, and vote in people who will stand for fairness and the coop members. "

The Reason for the Bylaw... wrote on Feb 5, 2008 12:52 PM:

" ...is supposedly because waiting longer to seat people gives MEA a chance to weed out people who violated campaign rules. Its a response to the legal decision say that the MEA bylaws don't let them keep people off the board when the violate the bylaws. But how does the 4-month-plus wait change that? "

Palin House Cleaning wrote on Feb 5, 2008 12:40 PM:

" Actually, I seem to remember Sarah Palin endorsing Peter Burchell in his last MEA election. Isn't that right? Seems to me that she's already started trying to clean up that house. Does that mean that the pro-Management crowd is going to start attacking the most popular governor in Alaska history, who happens to be a republican, as a socialist-lefty-enviro-fascist-wacko? "

Do I Trust MEA? wrote on Feb 5, 2008 12:21 PM:

" No. Not even a little. Their bylaw committee publishes opinions without submitting to the board as they are supposed to. They don't appoint bylaw committee members like they are supposed to. Carmony, a paid employee, takes time out of his busy day to campaign against a bylaw change. They won't let both sides have their say. They kick out 5-20% of ballots and won't let voters fix the problem for next time. They spend member money on commercials for Jordan months after he starts campaigning for reelection. The list goes on and on. "

" MEA has been run by the same old tired mentality that has ruined the republican party. MEA needs some Palin type house cleaning.
Jordan has to go. Baird is a party hack and is worse than Tuckerman.
Kincaid and Burchell are the best choices. "

Indefensible wrote on Feb 5, 2008 8:43 AM:

" The current bylaw is indefensible. Changing it is the only proper course of action. Vote yes to change the bylaw, and vote for Burchell and Kincaid for a more open and transparent MEA board. Time to send this overreaching management team packing. "
