James Leigh Clark, 80, died peacefully at his home in Wasilla Feb. 12, 2008, surrounded by family and loved ones.

A funeral will be held in honor of his life at 2 p.m. Feb. 18 at First Baptist Church in Palmer.

Clark was born in Davenport, Iowa, Sept. 18, 1927, to Bernie and Morton L. Clark. He graduated from high school in Lima, Ohio, and went on to receive bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, in 1973.

On Dec. 29, 1946, he married Linda June Applegate in Scottsbluff, Neb. They were married for 61 years.

Clark served as a Southern Baptist church planting missionary and pastor in Florida, Texas, Wyoming and Alaska. In Alaska, he lived in Anderson, where he was pastor. He also served as a missionary in Ft. Yukon, Chalkytsik, Venetie and Healy. In Jackson Hole, Wyo., he was a church planter. In 1993, he retired and moved to Wasilla.

Churches exist today in Healy, Jackson Hole and Alpine, Wyo., as a result of his ministry. Prior to being a missionary he was a social service worker, cattle rancher and dude ranch operator.

Clark was a faithful Southern Baptist and supporter of First Baptist Church of Palmer, as well as a member of the NRA, Republican National Committee and supporter of President George W. Bush. Although not a veteran, he was always patriotic. He was proud owner and sole proprietor of Galv-Weld Products, a company founded by his father in 1936.

Clark enjoyed hunting, camping, singing hymns, working on the computer, spending time with his wife and family, playing musical instruments and shooting guns. A couple of his favorite thoughts were “He is God, I Am Not” and “Jesus Christ the Same Yesterday, Today and Forever.”

The Clarks have four sons, Bernie (Janet) Clark of North Carolina, Tim (Glenda) Clark of Utah, Matt (Fran) Clark of Talkeetna and Mark (Teresa) Clark of North Dakota; and a daughter, Rebecca (Jack) Sherman of Palmer. He is survived by all, as well as 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his two brothers, Don (Chris) Clark of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Jack (Alice) Clark of Erie, Colo., and one sister, Alta Heinz of Bradenton, Fla.

In lieu of flowers, donations for church planting may be made to the Alaska Baptist Convention, 1750 O’Malley Road, Anchorage, AK 99507.

" We also want to give our thoughts about Jim and Linda; our deepest regards go out to Linda and family at this time. We knew Jim and Linda in Alaska for some time when they were in Anderson and we lived in Fbks. and then later in Jackson and Wasilla. Only the best memories of them, always gracious and very loving. Jim was the example of a wonderful Christian man. We look forward to meeting him again in eternity. We send these thoughts to his wife and family with our love. Ken and Joy Dale Canon City, Co. "

" Reverend Jim Clark was truly a man of God. He loved the Lord with all of his
heart and was always concerned that everyone he met came to pray to receive Christ as their Savior. He also
had a pastor's heart for Christians and
always had a listening ear for those who were troubled. He's up in heaven with Jesus now, just praising and worshiping God, and greeting all his loved ones who are there. "
