WASILLA — During Wasilla's seven-year Northern Lights Conference winning streak, the Warriors have come close to losing on several occasions.

Not Saturday.

The streak was never in danger against the visiting Kenai Central Kardinals, as the Warriors raced to a 16-0 lead to start the game and never looked back, picking up a 59-26 rout at Wasilla High School.

The Warriors have now won 98 consecutive NLC games, a string of victories dating back to 2001.

All-state guard Jenna Johnson led Wasilla with 21 points and 11 rebounds despite having to play without her customary No. 22 jersey.

“They lost my uniform overnight when they washed ‘em,” Johnson explained after the game.

Wearing No. 45 for the first time in her career didn’t slow the junior guard one bit, as she scored 14 points in the first half to outscore the Kardinals on her own.

Shelby Fulton recorded 13 points for Wasilla, which got points from nine different players in the win.

Skyler Nuss added eight points, Celeste Colegrove had five, Ashlyn Frizzelle scored four, Hhillary Apangolook and Kaitlyn Pevan each had three, and Jillian Troisi and Kelsey Cottle added one each.

Kyla Steward scored 10 points and grabbed four rebounds to lead Kenai. Adrianna Garcia and Lacie Wortham chipped in five points each, Amanda Mills had four and Megan Gabriel added two.

Johnson said the easy win gave coach Jeannie Hebert-Truax a chance to change things up on the offensive and defensive side of the ball with a variety of looks.

“Coach was mixing up the offense and defense,” Johnson said.

While the Warriors have had some close calls this season — including a two-point win over rival Palmer — Johnson said Saturday’s game was a nice opportunity for the team to relax and just enjoy the game.

“It’s fun to just to see all of the girls having fun as a team,” she said.

The win helped Wasilla improve to 7-0 in the NLC and 11-6 overall this season, while Kenai fell to 2-4 in conference and 9-9 overall.
