Haynes was born Jan. 25, 1927, in Dayton, Ohio. He received a bachelor of arts degree in dairy technology, and he served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1946. He came to Alaska in June 1959 and lived in Anchorage until 1962. From 1962 to 1964, Haynes lived in Palmer, where he was the dairy manager for Matanuska Maid.

Haynes was a member of East Woods Presbyterian Church in Vancouver, had been a 4-H leader, a Boy Scout master (Order of the Arrow), a Little League official and an elder of the Presbyterian church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, being a gentleman farmer and was a fan of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
Survivors are his wife, Ellen Haynes, of Vancouver; daughters Leisa Rose Carrick of Palmer and Mary Elaine Haynes of Houston, Texas; sons David Michael of Bremerton, Wash., Edward James of Vancouver, John Alan of Bend, Ore., and Donald Andrew of Pasco, Wash.; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are with Alaskan Heritage Memorial Chapel and Crematory.
