A memorial service was held May 1 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Palmer. An additional service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 3 at the Palmer Pioneers’ Home. Her ashes will be interred in the Green Lawn Cemetery in Atlanta, Ga., at a later date.
Hurt was born May 14, 1917 in Eldora, Iowa. She graduated from Eldora High School in 1933. She began her Alaska residency part-time in 1988 and full-time in May of 2003. She resided with her daughter Patti until June 2005.

Hurt enjoyed reading out loud to children and also caring for children. She was also affiliated with The Red Hat Society.
“She was a kind and loving mother, sister and grandmother,” her family wrote. “She lived her life by the Word. She was generous with her love of Christ, and looked to find the Light in everyone. She will be greatly missed by her family and many, many friends.”
Donations may be made in her honor to Trinity Lutheran Church Childhood Development Center (CDC).
Hurt was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Hurt; and brothers Edwin and Harlan Harwood.
She is survived by her daughters Patricia Hurt of Palmer, Nancy and son-in-law Branson Redding of Homosassa, Fla., and Sue Alexander of Gainesville, Ga.; son Frank H. Hurt of St. Thomas, US. Virgin Islands; daughter-in-law Christine Lauterborn of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; sisters Mary Jane Shorter of Novato, Calif., and Anna Mae Crane of Whittier, Calif.; grandsons Gabe Hurt of Palmer, Garrick Delzell of Denver, Colo., and Chad Delzell of Boulder, Colo.; granddaughters Linda Hughes of Camden, S.C., and Mary Martinez of Georgetown, S.C.; two great-granddaughters and numerous nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are with Alaskan Heritage Memorial Chapel & Crematory.
