FAIRBANKS — Much like a week ago, the title came down to the final race of the day.

The Bartlett Golden Bears used a win in the 1,600-meter relay to edge the Palmer Moose for the boys’ team title at the 2008 Alaska 4A Track and Field State Championships at Lathrop High School on Saturday.

Bartlett finished first with 92 total points, five points ahead of Palmer’s 87. “It came down to the four-by-four,” Palmer head coach Dale Ewart said by cell phone Saturday, as the team was returning to the Valley from the Interior. “They battled for every second, right up until the very end.”

Palmer led by a single point in the team standings before the final race, Ewart said.  Bartlett’s relay squad posted a time of 3 minutes and 26.51 seconds to beat teams from Colony (3:30.16), Kodiak (3:34.02) and Palmer (3:34.19). The Bears earned 10 team points for the win, and Palmer — which finished 0.17 seconds behind rival Kodiak in the event — had to settle for four fourth-place points.

Although the Moose had to settle for second, Ewart said he is thrilled about the accomplishment of a team that brought a dozen athletes to the state meet.

“The kids ran exceptionally,” Ewart said. “I’m sure happy for them.”

The Northern Lights Conference title also came down to the final event last week, with Kodiak edged Colony and Palmer for the conference crown.

Kodiak finished third in the state event, while Colony was fourth.

The second-place Moose can also boast three individual crowns and a relay title.

Senior Jake Parisien won the 3,200 in record-setting fashion, upsetting the prior record-holder Trevor Dunbar, of Kodiak.

Senior Kevin Smith earned his first state title with a win in the 800-meter.

Sophomore John Daly scored one of the surprise victories of the two-day meet with a win in the 200-meter dash.

Parisien and Smith also helped the Moose to a win in the 3,200-meter relay.

Parisien shattered the state record with his winning time of 9:11.27 in the 3,200. His time was 14 seconds better than the old record, and two seconds better than Dunbar, who finished second in the event.

Though classified as an upset, Ewart certainly knew Parisien was capable of the feat.

“I knew he had it in him,” Ewart said.

Parisien credited a more aggressive strategy.

“I was going all or nothing,” Parisien said.

 Smith edged Kenai’s Bill Kiefer by 0.35 seconds to win the 800. Both Smith (1:59.55) and Kiefer (1:59.80) were the only runners to break 2 minutes in the race.

Although that was a slim margin, it failed to compare to Palmer’s win in the 3,200 meter. Parisien, Smith, Rick LeCheminant and Ryan Cunningham used a time of 8:07.88 to edge Colony by just a tenth of a second.

Smith and Colony senior Brad Truax traded the lead throughout the final 400 meters, but the Palmer senior leaned across the finish line to give the Moose the win.

“Kevin found another gear and out-leaned him,” Parisien said. “It was one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen.”

Daly upset Bartlett’s Wah’fe Granger to win the 200-meter title.

“John came out of nowhere and won that,” Ewart said.

Ewart said Daly’s win, combined with senior Devin Konkler’s sixth-place finish in the event helped the Moose take the team lead late into the meet.

Senior Tony Guzman finished third in both hurdles events for PHS.

Sophomore Tim Jaronik helped lead Colony to a fourth-place finish in the team standings with the Knights’ lone individual title of the day.

Jaronik finished with a time of 50.51 in the 400, to edge Bartlett’s Raymond Reid (50.80) and Anthony Crook (51.21).

In the field events, Brian Cox finished third in the triple jump, Antone Zagars finished sixth in the high jump and Jesse Thornock was seventh in the long jump.

Other top CHS runners included Cody Huggins (third in the 3,200 and 14th in the 1,600) and Truax (fourth in the 400 and fifth in the 800).

Twins Dave (fourth) and Doug (eighth) also finished in the top-eight of the 300-meter hurdles.

Colony also did well in the relay events finishing second in the 3,200-meter relay, second in the 1,600-meter relay, fourth in the 800-meter relay.

A pair of Wasilla throwers led the Warriors in the state meet.

Senior Beebo Russell was fifth in the discus while sophomore John Knowles was fifth in the shot put.

Houston senior Israel Morales finished sixth in the discus.

Palmer girls

Senior Geneva Ratcliff led the Moose to the top finish among Valley girls squads with a pair of second-place throws.

Ratcliff finished as the runner-up to Soldotna senior Paige Blackburn in both the discus and shot put.

“She had a great weekend,” Ewart said. “She did a great job.”

Ratcliff had a throw of 36 feet and 10 1/2 inches in the shot put and 113-10 in the discus.

Ratcliff’s teammate Tabitha Corbin finished sixth in the long jump.

Rachel Hoffman led the Warriors with a pair of fifth-place finishes in the hurdles events. The Wasilla 3,200-meter relay squad of Jessica Gross, Alison Kelley, Kendra Nelson and Keri Clump finished seventh.

Sophomore Sierra Hodgson led the Knights with a seventh-place finish in the long jump. Fellow sophomore Megan Bowker was eighth in the 400 for CHS.

Su Valley junior wins state title

Susitna Valley junior Caitlin Hunt earned a 1-2-3A state title in the high jump on Friday.

Her mark of 4-8 was an inch better than second-place finishers Ashley Bartolowitz of Ninilchik and Daisy Morgan of Tok.

Hunt entered the competition in a four-place tie for the top jump of the regular season, with a mark of 5-0.

Hunt also finished sixth in the long jump, and helped the Rams finish second in the 800-meter relay.

Hunt, Marina Cron, Ashley Evans and Missy Scott finished with a time of 2:01.01, behind first-place Grace Christian (1:54.16).

Freshman Nick Nysewander-Kellard led the Su Valley boys with a pair of top-five finishes.

The freshman, who earned the Region II most outstanding athlete honor last week, was fourth in the 100 and fifth in the 200.
