Get bad drivers off our roads

Published on Thursday, July 17, 2008 10:46 PM AKDT

To the driver of the shiny black GMC or Chevy late model extended cab pickup with dark tinted windows, low-profile wide tires on fancy rims, and the bright yellow Kendall Auto Sales sticker displayed as a license plate, we saw you! Twice, actually.

You passed the car behind us and then us at the same time on Palmer-Fishhook about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at speeds that must have approached 80 to 90 mph. Yeah, you passed in a legal passing zone, but in reckless disregard for anyone else on the road. You disappeared like a cruise missile, turning right on Trunk Road with your foot to the floor.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, on our way back from Palmer, you passed us again at the same high rate of speed, along with passing several other cars, one of which was on the blind curve just before New Hope, and then you continued at the same high rate of speed towards Turner’s Corner, again disappearing like a cruise missile.

The reason to recognize you for your feats of high speed driving is to let you know that we, along with our daughter, her husband and our grandkids, are on these roads often and we don’t need a moron like you endangering our lives or theirs by your reckless disregard for what is a generous speed limit on both Fishhook and Trunk. I can’t think of a single reason that justifies the manner in which you were driving.

Now if anyone knows who the idiot driver is, perhaps by the above description, you might inform him/her that we have personally complained to the Alaska State Troopers and they have the description of the vehicle on their radar screen as well. It is only a matter of time that they will be able to give him/her the recognition and attention he/she so richly deserves.

Until then I hope nobody gets killed. Meanwhile, I encourage others to watch out for this reckless driver and report his outrageous driving antics to local law enforcement if you see him/her. There has been a lot of talk about speeders in this paper lately; we are actually trying to do something about one of them.

" I have been passed on Peck St. 4 times recently. The speed limit is posted 30 mph. These young new people might not know about the boy that was hit and killed on this street 5 or 6 years ago. Good people in this town slow down in this woodsy residential area...slow down for the kids. "

" Oh, the safety corridor is patrolled, when possible. Troopers tend to have to run from call to call, getting little time for proactive patrol. Do call in reckless drivers while they driving recklessly. Get as much detail as possible including vehicle description, driver and passenger description, location and direction and exact violations. If a trooper or police officer is available, they will try to intercept. "

" I drive fast on these roads, because just as you get mad at us who drive over the limit, many of you drive way under the limit as well. This is a two way street, no pun intended, we gauge our leaving time based on traveling the speed limit to our destination. Slowing a whole line of traffic down is the same thing, against the law!! If you were to pull over and let us pass, traveling so fast would be minimized. Get a life and I hope you get a ticket for slowing us down!!!! "

" same problems every where! the speed limit is a limit. not a required speed. it would be nice if some would at least approach the limit or use a side road. but folks traveling like cruise missles on the cell phone, eating lunch, etc are straight up idiots. (trying to convince my wife to let me move us up there. wish me luck! lived there when I was a kid) "

" To everybody's the police..... I may have actually underestimated the speed. To clarify, he passed us like we were sitting still both times, and we were driving the speed limit. Maybe you exaggerate when you say that most people exaggerate when angry? I don't think I would be exaggerating when I say that this driver is not a rare example. The various police blotters, and trooper dispatch logs prove it. I think anger at these miscreant lawbreakers is a good thing. "

" Now we need speed limits at the Grocery store? I'm 3rd generation Mat-Su. And assertive and very social. He was probably going 45 in a 55 and the guy passed him at 65. I have this discussion with my mom all the time. She thinks everybody is speeding when they are passing her. But when I say "mom look at you speedometer." Oh, she's going 40 mph. Come on people be assertive! At least do the speed limit.
    65 doesn't mean 55 and 55 doesn't mean 45 or 35 God forbid! Get a clue! "

" Remove the Kendall license plate covers and you have described many of these trucks in the valley. Are you sure of the description? 90 is pretty fast to get a good description. Have you ever driven 90 mph? If their foot was really "to the floor" they probably would have been going 100 - 180 mph depending on the engine. "

" If the police see this guy all they can do is warn him. They won't issue a ticket unless they see him doing somthing wrong. And they are not going to take his license away or tell him to get off the road because you said so.
"Must have approached 80 or 90 mph?"
I have found that most people exaggerate when they're angry.
I just followed a guy home from Palmer on the Old Glenn this morning. He drove 31-33 mph the whole way even though the speed limit was posted 55 mph 3 times. I'm not exaggerating. "

" I am so glad that you reported this nut to the authorities. I'm so tired of people who think that they're the only ones in this universe and that we're just in their way. I seriously think most people here are unsocialized. No eye contact, or friendly hellos, they almost run you over in the aisle at the store, like they really don't see anyone but themselves or you must get out of their way. This is a society of people, yes even though we're in remote Alaska. Learn to live with others. "

" Probably the same yahoo who does this through the double-fine safety corridor along the Parks Highway in the morning. I've never seen anyone pulled over through this corridor and I know for a fact it's not patrolled. Safety corridor my foot! "
