Suzanne C. Powell, 41, died July 21, 2008 at Providence Hospital in Anchorage. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at the United Protestant Church, 713 South Denali Street, in Palmer. Pastors Tim and Leisa Carrick will officiate.

Powell was born in Salzburg, Austria, on Aug. 14, 1966 and raised in Portland, Ore. She graduated Vassar College in 1988. From there, she joined the Peace Corp. and was sent to Tonga where she met her husband with whom she had two beautiful, precious daughters. She graduated University of Oregon School of Law magna cum laude. She passed the foreign service examination and was invited to train in Washington, D.C., but the events of Sept. 11, 2001 gave her pause for the safety of her family, leading her instead in 2003 to join her twin sister in the Alaska District Attorney’s Office as a prosecutor.

Her family wrote: “Foremost, Suzanne loved spending family time with her daughters;  camping and subsistence activities, such as dip netting and gardening, were among her favorites with them. She had a quick wit, ready smile, and warm heart. Suzanne enjoyed her work with law enforcement and took immense satisfaction in helping to protect the people of Alaska.”

She is survived by husband, two daughters, twin sister, sisters, brothers, mother, father, nieces and nephew.

In lieu of flowers and in keeping with her priorities, please are asked to make donations to a scholarship fund for her two young daughters who she leaves behind.

Please make checks payable to: Fidelity UGMA, and send to: P.O. Box 110384, Anchorage, AK 99511-0384.

" I enjoyed working cases with her she was always prepared - this is a stunning loss. Thank you for your example and service Suzanne. "

" May her family treasure many wonderful personal memories and keep her smile in their hearts. Look at all she accomplished in her life cut too short. Her concise presentation and examination skills and energy were imposing in court. Anyone who saw her in action knew she was prepared and engaged in her cases. It is such a loss to our community when such a dedicated person dies so young. "
