A month in prison

Published on Friday, August 8, 2008 12:32 AM AKDT

It has been a month since I turned myself in to U.S. marshals on June 30. My first two weeks were spent at the Anchorage Correctional Complex and the last two at the Seattle Federal Detention Center. From here it’s Oklahoma City, followed by Taft, Calif.

I wish to let all of my friends know I’m doing well. Obviously, it’s not easy being incarcerated, especially after being denied a fair trial. But I’m staying strong and keeping my chin up. A clear conscience helps too.

I’m looking forward to my appeal being heard and remain confident I will eventually prevail. In the meantime, I intend to stay busy with a lot of reading and writing (and prayer of course) as I anticipate a good outcome.

I wish to thank all of you who have inquired on my behalf. Your support and friendship is making my situation a lot easier.

Vic Kohring

" The Frontiersman can print letters of a now convicted felon, but where were you in all those years of his term? Smiling and shaking hands with the guy but never looking under the surface. Many people tried to say he was crooked but "he was your friend". Mark Kelsey came along and helped clean up Juneau. Now Sarah is in and trying to clean up the troopers and you rake her across the coals instead of looking hard at the troopers. There are MANY people trying to say DPS has serious "double standard" issues. Where's the courage? "

" Ya gotta love a guy who keeps in touch with his 'friends' even when he is locked up. It must provide him with some measure of comfort to be able to send messages to his many supporters who still believe in him and his message of anti government.
I encourage him to keep writing to us and let us know how he feels, what books he is reading and how the appeal is coming. It will also be good for all of us to get an insight into the world of prison. Keep the faith, Vic. "

Speeding is a violation wrote on Aug 17, 2008 9:36 AM:

" If you hit someone while speeding or DUI then it isn't speeding you are charged with, but assault or murder, depending of the severity of the injury. You can still be given a ticket for speeding in addition to other charges, but it is still a violation. Comparing bribery and speeding is like comparing apples and oranges. It is a weak attempt by Crimes to minimize Kohring's crime. That is truly amusing. "

" Oh, you can still be charged with a felony for speeding or drunk driving, especially if you hit and kill someone with your car. Although bribery is a felony, it usually doesn't kill anyone. I like it when hypocrites like you try to justify your own lawbreaking behavior as you drive down the road drunk at 80mph with no drivers license, the whole time pointing your finger at others who have been convicted of a crime. People like you believe laws are for other people. Please keep writing. You amuse me. "

" Yup bribery is a crime....., so is driving without a license, speeding, and driving drunk. I would bet that half of the commenters on this page speed every day with their kids in the car. That too is setting an example. All of the hypocrites pointing fingers at Vic have 3 fingers pointing back at themselves. Please go home to your glass houses. Your glee at Vic's situation doesn't become any of you. "

" Please stop printing these letters. It's always the same song with the guy. What's the value in printing everything he sends in, just because he's sent it? The guy is old news, and continuing to print his nonsensical letters is only feeding his massive ego. Get lost, Vic. "

But I do find it amusing to read all of the blah blah blah blah blah comments. You go Vic, I will read month two and all the comments that appear. I hope that you do get the verdict reversed just to make all these know it all commenters blow a gasket. "

" I remember during Mother's Day; the Frontiersman allowed Vic to write a compass piece about how great his mom was. The problem was the first paragraph was plagerized from a broadcast Paul Harvey had done. Were we to think that Vic came up with that intelligence on his own. He did not give Paul Harvey credit. Vic should return to his home in Beaverton Oregon after serving his punishment for selling out the people he claimed to represent. He does not own property in the Mat-Su-Borough. He does not contribute to paying land taxes. "

" Got to love the Frontiersman new editor. They won't publish letter to the editor from citizens unless they are strictly conservative points of view, yet Vic is allowed to write anything he wants. To allow an author to write, "after being denied a fair trial," seems pretty libelous considering a judge said it was fair. So if Vic can write lies and innuendo after he is no longer of any importance in the community, when will you publish other letters from general community members and not just the same 10 people over and over? "

He is a number now, just like any other inmate, he is no better then any other inmate. "

" He really needs to be evaluated for some mental health issues. A perpetrator who perceives himself as a victim. His constituents are the real victims of his crime. He should consider himself lucky. This was the only incident that he was actually caught. Like any other criminal, there are other offenses that they are never caught at. He has been living a delusional lie since he was first elected, pretending he was an Alaskan resident. Most criminals live in the state of denial. Obviously, Vic Kohring is no exception. I bet you don't print all the letters from PCC. "
