Colony sweeps Interior Invite

FAIRBANKS ” There was a lot of green at the front of the pack on Saturday.

Nine different Colony runners scored top 10 finishes to lead the Knights to a sweep of the team titles at the Interior Invitational in Fairbanks on Saturday.

“It was very exciting,” Colony co-head coach Mark Doner said. “Beautiful day, beautiful trails, great meet. The team ran very well.”

Sydney Stewart was the first of four Knights to finish in the top 10 of the girls race to lead Colony to a nine-point win over perennial power West Valley and Tanner Enloe was the first of five CHS boys in the top 10 to lead his squad to a lopsided win over the second-place Wolfpack.

Doner said the Knights traveled to the meet not really knowing what to expect.

“We didn’t really know what they had. West Valley has been a power house for years on the girls’ side, and they’ve been creeping up on the boys side. It turned out Lathrop had the guns there. It was a close race between those two teams,” Doner said. “It was exciting to see what Fairbanks had. We got to see the Peninsula schools at Skyview last week, and this was a good chance to see what Fairbanks had and run with them.”

Stewart finished in fifth with a time of 21 minutes and 46 seconds. Maria Wick (sixth, 21:46.8) and Abby Jahn (seventh, 21:53) finished right on Stewart’s heels.

“A big pack of green came in,” Doner said.

Heidi Doner (22:24) followed in 12th, while Taylor Stewart (13th, 22:41) and Alyssa Hutchins (14th, 22:44) also finished in the top 15.

Enloe finished in third to lead the Knights with a time of 18:15.6, but teammate Steven Sinnett crossed the finish line just 0.2 seconds later for CHS.

Doner said the work of Sinnett a first-year runner for the Knights, was certainly a highlight in the race.

“He’s never run for us before, but he’s a very good athlete,” Doner said.

Schyler Knopp (seventh, 18:46), Jeff Ford (ninth, 18:53) and Alex Reimer (10th, 19:03) also finished in the top 10 for CHS.

Houston also competed in the event. Joe Warner led the HHS boys with a 40th-place finish, while Alicia Kaer paced the Houston girls with a 76th-place finish.
