Palin’s earned newspaper’s respect, support

As outlined in today’s editorial, Wasilla, the Mat-Su Valley and Gov. Sarah Palin are under a great deal of scrutiny following Friday’s announcement from the McCain campaign that our governor has been selected as his vice-presidential running mate.

It didn’t take long for the national media to descend on our community with requests for interviews and information on who they termed “a relative political unknown.” Initial inquiries to this newspaper were generally “Who is Sarah Palin?”-type questions. More specific questions sought to uncover clues to her political and public service background, with the intent of finding out if she really has the experience required of a VP candidate.

Although the national media doesn’t yet know this, many of the same questions were raised about Palin during her gubernatorial campaign. Paul Jenkins, Voice of the Times editor and Palin critic, asked, “How would somebody with just six years’ experience as Wasilla mayor — and none at the state level — be able to manage an enterprise as complicated, complex and dynamic as Alaska?” Former two-term Gov. Tony Knowles emphasized Palin’s relative inexperience as he sought to separate himself from Palin during the 2006 campaign.

Sound familiar?

Wasilla and the Mat-Su Borough know that Palin’s experience goes beyond six years as mayor. We know she also served on Wasilla’s city council for four years and about her years of volunteer work serving the community she calls home.

Another thing we know about Sarah Palin is that she is not perfect. But, as we outlined in a 2006 editorial endorsing her for governor, her willingness to acknowledge this shows uncommon strength of character. We challenged her in that same editorial to stay true to her message of inclusiveness and to the open, accountable brand of government that Alaskans were hungry for. We closed the editorial by saying if she does, the people of Alaska, like the people of the Valley she calls home, will be proud to call Palin one of their own, too.

As she has so many times in her life, Palin took up that challenge — and succeeded. Alaskans have embraced Palin and her style of governing, evidenced by the remarkable approval ratings the governor has enjoyed. She has shown that she’s not afraid to make hard decisions because it’s the right thing to do, although those decisions may be unpopular with some. She’s been fair and true to her convictions and to the people she serves.

While some question Palin’s experience, they cannot question her leadership. A person is either a good leader or not, and Palin has exhibited great leadership skills in all positions she’s held. There is an argument to be made that leadership, and the qualities that define a good leader, are inherently more important than experience.

Just as the people of Alaska did, the nation will learn this, and more, about the Sarah Palin we know and have known for most of her life. They will learn that she has made mistakes along the way, but has the mettle to overcome and learn lessons from them that, in the end, make her stronger and seasoned.

I point out that Palin has made mistakes because, based on questions we’ve been fielding over the weekend, I know that much of the national media attention will be focused on those mistakes and some of the controversial issues during her terms as mayor and through her governorship. What shouldn’t get lost in all of this are the accomplishments in her career and the overall record of success she has enjoyed, as they greatly outnumber the mistakes and controversies.

Although journalists and politicians don’t always mesh well, Governor Palin has always been respectful of the job we in the media have to do. She has earned my respect and support as Wasilla’s mayor and Alaska’s governor and will have my support for vice president of the United States of America.

" Eh, I'm not impressed. I'd rather know that she's not afraid to make the _right_ decisions even tho it was _hard_ to do.

And what exactly makes her such a great leader? With all the past experience you've touted, can you give examples on just what makes Sarah a great leader?

And we all now know that community worker types don't really do anything. Because Sarah said so herself. "

" Thank you for a REAL opinion as opposed to sensationalism. The major media outlets seem more interested in digging up dirt and scandal than facts and truth. Even Brian Williams at the RNC was more interested in Bristol's pregnancy than Sarah's performance as governor as talk topics. Has even Brian Williams become a pseudo Entertainment Tonite/National Enquirer reporter?
Sarah will be a wonderful VP. She has the courage required to make tough decisions and she isn't afraid of stepping on the good ole boys' toes. Even if these good ole boys are in the media itself. "

" I'm worried about a vice president who believes in aerial shooting or poisoning of wildlife, which get in either their or the oil industries' way. I'm also worried about Palin's stand on the Pebble Mine. Sodium cyanide and mercury is used process gold ore which poisons the air, waters, fish and mammals/humans who eat the fish. The human fetus tops the food chain. Oil and coal wastes are also highly contaminated with mercury, arsenic, uranium and radionuclides increasing the risks of brain damage, cancers of the bone, lungs of mammals including human children from drilling, mining and burning as fuel. " I hope the people of Wasilla don't think all people of the lower 48 are looking down on their town. As near as I can see, Wasilla produced a charming yet strong woman to represent them to the country. She seems to be a good example of small town America. "

" In your commentary, you comment, "But, as we outlined in a 2006 editorial endorsing her for governor, her willingness to acknowledge [that she is not perfect] shows uncommon strength of character." That doesn't seem to be the case when the AP reports that she "...blamed supporters of the Democratic presidential ticket for spreading "misinformation and flat-out lies" about her and her family." What lies? Perhaps instead of tearing down the opposition, she might eat some of the humble pie you purport her to possess... "

" Please reprint online Mayor Palin's 1996 or 1997 response to library allegations by political opponents. Please re-interview Palin, Mary Ellen Baker (Emmons), Anne Kilkenny, Stein, librarians, to confirm/deny censorship actions, policy beliefs, or allegations for which Frontiersman is cited as source, but which so far cannot be confirmed or denied as facts. " I am writing to make an observation of Kari Sleight in a national news interview she was part of. We as a nation do not know Sarah Palin as you in Alaska do, but in an interview Ms. Sleight seemed to be kissing up to the VP candidate and her background. I don't know if this was due to nervousness or trying to cover-up the Palin involvement in the firing of your safety commissioner. Sleight seemed to shy away from going into the subject. The news should cover all aspects of a story. "

" Thank you for the article. I would like more information on Sarah from those that know her best. I tend not to trust the New England media. I have not decided my vote, but from what I see Sarah was a refreshing choice. I think the comments and innuendo regarding her and her family's private life are despicable. All I want to know is: Is she a good leader? Can I trust her word? What is her vision for our country? "

" That's great that you all love Sarah Palin so much. But if John McCain were to humbly pass away during his term, (that is, if he manages to get elected in what is the most senile of campaigns), I don't want a woman who leaves her Down Syndrome baby at home while she goes back to "work" 3 days later ruling Alaska's Oil Empire and forcing her pregnant unwed daughter to marry an ill-prepared boy at the age of 17, to be my president, let alone my VP! " Thank you for supporting our beloved Sarah, but what about John McCain? Does your endorsment of Sarah as Vice-President mean you support John McCain for President as well? If not, is it like saying we support the troops but not the mision? Clarity on issues is such a wonderful quality in editorials. Does the Frontiersman and the editor endorse the Republican ticket? If so, and one must always hope, it would be a welcome change, real change the Valley could believe in...(sorry to end with preposition but it is so popular these days) "
