Alaskans on the dole

Published on Monday, September 8, 2008 10:55 PM AKDT

Alaska rakes in much more in federal funds than it pays out. At the same time, its own residents are getting over $3,000 in dividends [including the one-time energy supplement]. That’s fine. Hopefully, it’s money well spent, but it does mean that Alaska is not a land of rugged independence.

Alaska is a dependent of the U.S. government and a dependent of all of us who pay taxes in the the largely urban, overwhelmingly Democratic donor states. You know us. We’re the ones currently being mocked by your governor for both elitism and community action!

For the sake of simple decency, Sarah Palin, her surrogates, her lobbyists and her party all need to stop asserting that they are morally superior to us, stop spewing vitriol at us and stop pretending to be agents of change in Washington.

" Hmmm..to the comment that the oil belongs to all the citizens of the US..this oil comes from Alaska statehood lands. When each of the states was admitted to the union, a certain portion of the land in each state was deeded to that state in order to give it with a means to provide for itself. Alaska was no different....EXCEPT THAT AFTER 50 YEARS ALASKA HAS STILL NOT RECEIVED ALL OF ITS PROMISED LANDS. The federal government has abrogated it's statehood contract by not fullfilling it's promise to the people of Alaska with the completion of transfer of land. "

" AGAIN, Most of Alaska's oil production comes from land OWNED BY THE STATE and leased to the oil companies...some of the most significant undeveloped resources are in areas owned by the federal government, such as ANWR and federal waters in the outer continental shelf. Revenue from oil production there would go mostly to the U.S. Treasury...

So you think you all deserve profits from STATE OWNED resource but don’t think we deserve federal money from taxes collected? We pay federal taxes.

You need to READ all posts; they will very clearly answer your questions "

Didn't taxpayers from across the U.S. buy the place from the Russians? Isn't it our federally collected tax dollars that have been subsidizing Alaska more lavishly than any other state, both before and after the bonanza of oil? "

The funny thing about conservatives is that they apply conservative values to everyone but themselves. I guess being a conservative means never having to pay your fair share.
