Troopergate good for the nation

Published on Thursday, September 18, 2008 9:35 PM AKDT

The legislative investigation into “Troopergate” needs to continue. And even with Sarah Palin’s new direction and the Republican party’s fervor to get the “R” flag to the top of the hill before the “D” one at all cost, the purpose and need of the investigation is the same with one twist, the nation now is watching.

The stakes are high for John McCain. However, our legislators are not beholding in any way to John McCain. They are beholding in public service to the people of the State of Alaska.

As a U.S. senator who espouses change and reform of the old ways of good-old boy politics, Senator McCain should welcome full disclosure and candor from all involved, including Palin. The McCain people must stop throwing up roadblocks and lame excuses because it demonstrates hypocrisy and disrespect for the people’s needs and desire to choose the best-qualified people based on evidence not emotion.

In her VP acceptance speech, Palin described herself as a “pitbull.” And if she characterizes herself as a dog, she is our dog. And we need to make sure she is of proper pedigree and behavior before we allow her to venture into someone else’s yard.

The investigation must go on, for us, and for the nation.

This has everything to do with truth and transparency in government. Isn't that the ticket she ran on, and oh, isn't that the ticket she is running on now? What happened to honest government? "

OMG! Stop the presses, that proves everything!!

What are you talking about a year ago? Are you suggesting that both parties knew that Palin would be Mcains running mate? Pssst.. we hadn't quite got around to the primaries a year ago Bob..

Wake up Bob,... Bob..BOB..WAKE UP!!!! "

We need transparency on this issue, otherwise it denigrates Palin's status to that of "just another opportunistic corrupt pol" like those in the lower 48.
    Alaska deserves better. "

" Once Obama's lawyer hacks (there's even a pic of them WITH OBAMA at a rally a year prior to this) took over the "investigation", the McCain-Palin team was correctly advised to use legal means to defend themselves. That is exactly what they are doing. The Obama attack lawyers don't care that the charge are utterly baseless, it's the show they want because that's what counts in the media. Those of you who claim to be swayed because of this should check the facts, not this incomplete and inaccurate article. The real info is out there folks, use your brains! "

" The most concerning development in all of this is the information about the manipulating of Trooper Wooten's Worker's Compensation claim and the access to his personnel file. This goes beyond poor judgement or the right to do whatever the Governor wants when itcomes to hiring and is a blatant violation of law. No wonder there is no cooperation from the Palin groupies. There appears to be more and more to hide everyday.I'm tired of living in a state run by the McCain campaign. Cooperate like you promised Ms. Palin or resign as the Governor. "

" Gov. Palin agreed with open transparent investigation until political foes made clear their agenda to do her harm with their contrived findings. She should not let the legislative axe grinders do the investigation under any circumstance. Proper channels were in place to review such matters and should have been followed. I am an independent voter, not dem or repub. "

She could let him go for not liking his haircut if she wanted to. The fact that she actually had other reasons are not relevant to the discussion. He was offered another position, shot it down, and is now changing his original remarks with each interview. First he "thought" Wooten was the reason, then he is "sure" that is the reason. Just go away! Monegan. "

" I am deeply thankful for this article. As an independent voter on the other side of the country (Maryland), I am confused by Sarah Palin's web of lies. She appears to lie even when it is not necessary. I am trying to have an open mind about this election but must admit that the shut down of this investigation by Palin and her husband have made me suspicious. Someone cannot say they stand for open and transparent government and then do this. I won't hold it against Alaska though :) "

This investigation could go either way. It could expose Sarah Palin as an honest hard working governor, or it could expose her as a liar and someone who abuses power. I am a democrat, but I honestly believe that the American people deserve to know which she is. "

" Regardless of your party...the people of Alaska desire to know the truth as to the firing of Monegan. Coming from someone who preached fair and transparent government - that's not exactly what we're getting. The McCain machine does have the clout to shut down the investigation, and that's exactly what's happening. Because we're only 660k strong I guess we don't really count in the scheme of things. where's the justice in that? "

No longer eager for "the truth to come out" and to put this behind us. Now the "First Dude" has refused to answer the subpoena. And yet she'll boast of reform, openess, cleaning-up Washington. Yeahhhhh rightttt... "

" Marnie, You are correct as are many other honest Alaskans. Gov Palin is most probably being misled by Karl Rove and her new handlers. But to restore her open and transparent reputation, she must stand up for what is right rather than what satisfies McCain's ambition for power. Sarah must do the right thing, now. People are watching and hoping. "

" I agree with the writer.

It is largely up to the people of Alaska, as it would be in any state, to push for honest and open investigations and disclosures.

Gov. Palin is now a national public/political figure, and she and McCain know that.

If The Republican Party manages to shut down the investigation, and truths and facts are buried - that will not stop the press from continuing to investigate on their own or stop the press from publicizing fiction and innuendo as well as facts, until the election, and if McCain is elected, beyond.
