‘Seascape’ more than another tall tale

MAT-SU — Palmer Arts Council is proud to announce its upcoming production of Edward Albee’s Tony Award-winning comedy  “Seascape,” scheduled to run for two weekends starting tonight, at the Palmer Depot. Produced by Mimi Pippel and directed by Grant Olson, “Seascape” promises to be truly escapist fare.

Written in 1975, “Seascape” tells the story of an older couple sitting on a beach trying to decide what to do with their life now that their children have left home and they’re comfortably retired from life. Suddenly, they encounter two large reptilian creatures. The two lizard-like creatures, a male and female, are testing the notion of climbing up the evolutionary ladder. It is on this level playing field, a sandy beach, where the two species engage in the most delightfully provocative and witty dialogue imaginable.

Valley theater veterans Larry Burton and Annie Williams play the older couple. Burton has graced the VPA stage most recently in shows like “Faith County” and “The Lion in Winter.” Williams performed most recently in the Palmer Arts Council production of “Proof.” She has also been seen in such VPA productions as “Dancing at Lughnasa,” “The Revengers’ Comedies,” and “Holiday.” Williams is also an accomplished children’s theater director.

The lizards are played by Brian Daniels and Jamie Stubbs. Stubbs will be making her stage debut with this show, but Daniels was most recently seen in the VPA production of “Run for Your Wife.”

Pippel and Olson joined together earlier to present “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, (Abridged)” for the Palmer Arts Council. Pippel serves as president of the Palmer Arts Council. Olson recently directed VPA’s award-winning “Run for Your Wife” and is slated to direct “Night of the Iguana” next spring. He also occasionally directs for Palmer High School, having most recently directed “Anything Goes.”

Linda Olson has created the beach front for this production of “Seascape.” The lizard costumes have been designed and constructed by Mary Putnam. Stepping in as chief carpenter building the set is Doug Maynard. Eric Deeter has been recruited to be the set painter. As has been the case in the past, Rod Mehrtens will once again provide lighting and sound for this PAC production.

Tickets at $15 for adults and $12 for seniors and students are available at Fireside Books in Palmer and Town Square Art Gallery in Wasilla. Seascape plays Fridays and Saturday, Sept. 19, 20, 26 and 27, with a starting time of 8 p.m. Two Sunday matinees are scheduled for Sept. 21 and 28 and will start at 2 p.m.
