WASILLA MAYOR: Metiva, Rupright headed for runoff

WASILLA — And then there were two.

Wasilla voters don’t quite have a new mayor yet, and Marty Metiva and Verne Rupright are heading to a runoff, according to unofficial results from the city.

Metiva, a current city councilman, got 31.6 percent of the vote Tuesday (275 votes), which is slightly ahead of local attorney Rupright’s 28.3 percent (246). Overall, turnout for the city election was light, with less that 19 percent of the city’s 4.773 registered voters casting ballots.

Although there are still 171 votes left to count, including early ballots, absentee voters and questioned ballots, city statutes say to win a mayoral election, the winner must receive at least 40 percent of the vote. That means even if either Metiva or Rupright were to get votes on all of the remaining 171 ballots, neither would meet that threshold. The early and absentee ballots will be counted Friday.

The men now face a runoff election Oct. 28 to determine who will fill the city’s top administrative post.

Hearing the news Tuesday night, Metiva said he will stay on pace with how he’s been campaigning by talking to residents and getting his platform to the public. His slight lead over Rupright when polls closed could put him at an advantage in the runoff if voters cast similar ballots, he said.

“It makes me feel good,” Metiva said of the results.

He also trumped the efforts of his campaign volunteers.

“I’m really proud of these people who helped,” Metiva said.

Rupright was not immediately available for comment following the posted results.

In the five-man race for Wasilla mayor, homebuilder Greg Koskela earned 21.3 percent of votes Tuesday, followed by city councilman Steve Menard with 13.8 percent and real estate broker Michael Carson, who received 4.6 percent.

In other results, voters elected Leone Harris with 449 votes (58 percent) to Gretchen O’Barr’s 317 to Wasilla City Council Seat C. Nancy Hall appears to be in line as the next Seat D representative,  holding a 408-362 vote lead over Mary Kvalheim with the 171 ballots left to county on Friday. Ron Cox was unopposed for Seat A on the council and received 620 votes.

" I voted for Vern Rupright, and I have heard only good things and recommendations about him from people I respect and people I don't know. This is not the case with Metiva. I got plenty of slick postcards from Metiva, but I don't believe he is best for Wasilla's future, and I'm pulling for Rupright. "

" You sure don't want to put a guy in as mayor who can't mamage his own finances. Metiva is certanly running on the shirt tail of his wife. Check his record and I am sure you will agree he is not the one we need, unless you want more of what we have now. A vote for Vern will put us on the right path to move ahead "

" Here's a question I'd like both guys to answer. Will you clean house of the directors and deputy directers if you're elected? I'll vote for the guy who promises to do it. All of them are Keller appointees and need to go. We've got great employees at the city and lousy managers, directors, deptuty directers and they all need to go so the employees can do their job without all the political junk and the out for whats in it for me attitude. " We need a MAYOR who doesn't bring so much baggage with him that he burdens the city with his problems. That is not the case with METIVA. He is loaded with so many questionable actions that one shudders at the thought of him being elected mayor. If you don't know of anything like this just read the articles about him over the past year. When a person moves from 12 cities before coming to Wasilla one can only ask why??? Don't be duped into believing his smooth tales, "my friend".
Be comfortable with a vote 4 Vern! "

" Please vote for Vern for he has a plan and has lived in the Valley for a number of years and is for family.
Metiva is running on the shirt tail of his wife and Keller. In other words we will see the Chamber running the city, not Mitvia himself. Bottom line we need change and a clear vision.
Getting back to Vern he wants to work with Palmer and Anchorage espcially since we are totally intertwined with these two enties. Bottom line we need change!!! "

Metivas support from outside wrote on Oct 8, 2008 9:22 AM:

" Metiva's financial support was from business owners not people. Look at the APOC reports. Rupright was able to get almost as many votes as Metiva BUT Rupright did it with HALF of the funding as Metiva had. This says a lot about Ruprights ability to use money in an effective manner. Metiva had almost twice as much money as Rupright but couldn't manage to get 40% of the vote. This says more than a mouthful! Look up Metiva's past online. There are some significant financial failures. I will be voting for Rupright! "

" Well, “view from close”, you must be far sighted and someone else must be doing your homework. Metiva came to town, like many new comers, got involved with a variety of causes. For some reason old timers find that bad. He stepped up to try to accomplish beneficial things and unlike many new comers that are quickly burnt out by negativity, he kept at it. The concept of the Chamber of Commerce and the City working TOGETHER must be new to you. Few people have the drive to keep pushing ahead despite criticism. I’m voting for Metiva again. "

A View from close.. wrote on Oct 8, 2008 7:17 AM:

" Those who cast their vote for Metiva haven't done their homework. He carries so much baggage into Wasilla that he needs the Chamber of Commerce to help him.
He is another smooth talker without much substance. His city council performance speaks for itself. Observations of him for 3 years sitting with Keller and company is not comforting in the least. If someone would take the time to question all the costly deals and promotions that have gone down without benefit to the city, they would scratch their heads in concern. No, this time Vote for Rupright Oct 28th "
