Warrior grapplers third at Bob Bailey

WASILLA — The Wasilla Warriors were represented by a pair of individual champions and finished third in the team standings of the Bob Bailey Invitational at Chugiak High School on Saturday.

The Warriors, who won the Houston Invitational last week, finished with 140.5 points.

Freshman Abe Fox and senior Chris Crane both won their weight classes.

Fox scored a 12-5 win over Dillingham’s Jared Miller, the top-seeded wrestler at 103, in the finals.

Crane pinned Palmer’s Sam Heindel midway through the first round of the 189-pound final.

Senior Casey Katchinska also advanced to the finals for WHS, but suffered a close 11-7 decision to Nolan McBryde, of the host Mustangs.

McBryde won the 2007 state title at 160.

Josh Brown, Jacob Marshall, Jeremy White, Ryan Pomrenke and Jed Johnson advanced to the consolation finals for Wasilla.

Brown earned a major decision over Dominic Kelly, of Lathrop, and finished third. Johnson finished third after Chugiak’s Greg Howard forfeited the match at 285.

Marshall (160) and Pomrenke (215) both finished fourth.

Palmer placed a pair of wrestlers in the finals and finished eighth overall with 62.5 points.

Nick Stahler, the top seed at 140, was edged by West Valley’s Derek Templeton 7-6 in the finals, and Heindel was pinned by Crane at 189.

L.J. Leppanen finished fourth for the Moose at 125.

Next weekend Palmer hosts the Lancer Smith Memorial Invitational.

Knights win Nikiski Duals

NIKISKI — The two-time defending state champion Colony Knights earned the team title at the Nikiski Duals on Saturday at Nikiksi High School.

Colony won 10 matches en route to a 52-18 win over Bethel in the finals.
