Rupright the right choice

Published on Saturday, October 25, 2008 8:34 PM AKDT

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who got to vote on Oct. 7.

I would also like to thank all the people who voted for me in this election. I am honored and humbled to be chosen to represent the residents of Wasilla (on city council), and I hope to excel beyond your expectations.

Some of my goals are to cooperate and work with the Mat-Su Borough to get a commuter rail into service. Although our fuel prices have come down a bit, I believe it is only a matter of time before they go back up again.

If we begin to work on the commuter rail now, then it will already be in service when it is really needed. I want to see the industrial park grow with new industry and new jobs.

I want to see the city treat all people fairly. We need development, but it needs to be accomplished in such a   way that we do not run over the people who already live and do business here. These are things I can not accomplish alone. Not only does the rest of the city council need to be in agreement, but our mayor will need to have these ideas for the city as well.

I would also like to take a moment to speak my mind regarding one of our mayoral candidates. Verne Rupright and his family have lived in Wasilla for more than 25 years. He has proven himself to be an honest and reputable resident of Wasilla. Through his personal and business life, Mr. Rupright has shown the common sense, financial responsibility and personal stability required to lead our great city into the future.

He has shown his stability by staying here, through the boom and the bust, raising his family and participating in our community. He has shown his financial responsibility by working hard as a captain in the military, later as a prison guard and then putting himself through law school while raising a family and opening his own business in downtown Wasilla.

We know where he is from, who he is and where he is going. In other words, in five, 10, 15 years from now, Mr. Rupright will still be here among us. This lends him to being an honest and fair mayor as he will still be here to face the rest of us after his term or terms are over. We are at a pivotal moment in time for our fair city. We need a mayor who will tell it like it is with no fancy lip service to skirt the issues.

Please, if you really want a mayor whose interests lie in what is best for Wasilla, and if you really want honest to goodness change for the better, then join me in voting for Rupright on Tuesday.

Leone Harris

" Does writing a letter to the editor constitute campaigning?

Since when do elected officials loose their right to voice an opinion?

In the presidential race other politicians have come out and endorsed the guys running for president. I guess that means it is okay for the "famous" politicians to endorse a presidential candidate but on the City level our officials have to hide from the public who they support? I would rather know who they support instead of them hiding it. Too bad we don't know where the rest of the officials stand. "

" It is good that Leone Harris is bold enough to not only take a stand (uncommon for politicians) but to come out and say where she stands. Too bad more of our elected officials are not that bold. YOU GO GIRL! We need more honesty. If Rupright is the one you support then he must be the right person to be our Mayor. I'm headed to the polls! "

" Leone Harris, you've already exceeded my worst expectations for you. You do not represent me by any stretch of the imagination. You've won your race; do the job you were elected to do, which is NOT campaigning for Rupright. Sheesh, I thought we'd have to wait longer than this to realize electing Harris was a mistake. How nice of her to remove the "election mask" so quickly. "

" Both mayoral candidates claim they support sustainable development. Too bad Rupright hasn't been able to sustain any ethics about running his campaign. Digging up his opponent's ex-spouse to dish dirt the day before the election is hardly behavior I want my mayor to engage in. Rupright will likely use his legal training to get away with as much as possible in public office; haven't we had enough of that? Metiva has shown involvement in the community; Rupright has shown involvement in mud-slinging of the most despicable kind. We don't need that in Wasilla; Metiva gets my vote! "

" I voted for Leone Harris, and Verne Rupright. I too want the rail as soon as possible. It is the sensible thing to do. I agree, Harris and Rupright are the best choice for Wasilla.

We need thoughtful and sustainable development that first takes into account the needs of the people who are already here, and who intend to stay around for the long haul.

Wasilla has a unique charm and we should nurture that friendly uniqueness rather than turning it into a hard-edged and ultimately bleak "Everytown, U.S.A." "
