Impressed with Berkowitz, Begich

Published on Monday, October 27, 2008 9:06 PM AKDT

As a longtime teacher in the Mat-Su Valley, I am so impressed with the stands that both Ethan Berkowitz and Mark Begich have taken in support of education. They both realize how important it is to reform No Child Left Behind so we can focus on teaching, not testing.

From my experience as a teacher and librarian for 26 years, I know that early childhood education access desperately needs to be expanded and funding for higher education in the form of increased federal student loans is imperative for our leaders of tomorrow.

This is also the position that Mark Begich and Ethan Berkowitz strongly support. I urge all Alaskans who are concerned about quality education for our children to support these two fine candidates who will lead us into the 21st century, instead of dwelling in the past.

" As a teacher, I fully support Obama, Begich and other Democrats. They understand that the focus of public education is not the 3 R's, but rather to mold thier minds into becoming future Komrades in the Socialist cause. Presenting silly things like "facts" gets in the way of teaching a skewed but politically correct version of the world. Using our positions to take advantage of captive minds and program them into future Socialists (I mean, 'Democrats') is why public education is so important these days! "

" To those of you believing that Democrats are a bunch of "Anti-Oil" lunatics need to learn to read. Virtually no democrat is anti-oil. Their platform is simply "We need to find a better way." Those wacko environmentalists you all have been attacking for years, started asking for change 30 years ago knowing that this day will come. We should have alternatives by now, but we don't because oil was cheap and looking to the future wasn't a "responsible choice" for our economy. We can drill on US soil all you like, but it won't fix this problem. Just prolong it. "

" Obama,Pelosi,Reed, Begich, Berkowitz! Wake up Alaska. We are an oil and gas industry state. Pelosi and Reed are anti oil and if Obama takes over the White House all Begich and Berkowitz will be able to do is shut up an tow the party line in the democrat horror show. No surprise that a teacher would support them though. They tend to be good little democrats and do what the teachers union tells them to do. After the above people get done with Alaska, the teacher will likely be looking for work elsewhere. "

" It is definitely time for change and for honest government in Alaska. We have become a national laughing stock between corrupt and imprisoned representatives and the bridge to you-know-where. Its time we had honest, qualified, and fresh faces in the Senate and Congress. I'm supporting Begich and Berkowitz all the way, in fact I already voted for them. "

" "I'm for education, but not this nonsense being taught in our schools today." - The current trend in today's education has been a direct result of No Child Left Behind and increased reduction in school funding. Both Begich and Berkowitz are strong pro-education canidates that want to restore this country to the lead in quality education. How could voting for them hurt education? Secondly, that fact that you used name calling "liberals = no-brainer" demonstrates that your education has greatly failed you, and as a Democrat who believes in the importance of good public education, I am ashamed for that. "

" First off, no, the Gov does not appoint if there is a vacancy; there is a special election. Second, I think having a Rep and a Senator inside the MAJORITY (and likely to be so for a decade or more) will do a lot more for us than a convicted felon in the Senate MINORITY and an about-to-be-indicted Representative in the MINORITY. Ted's power is gone, for better or worse. So is Don's. Begich and Berkowitz are the only hope we really have left to us to get anything done. "

Even if (when) both are elected, then convicted, it's my understanding that it'll be up to up to the govornor to name their replacements. While it'll be a sour pill for me to swallow, I still have to vote for these two. It still beats the blue alternative. Republicans/nonpartisans, your vote CAN STILL MATTER! "

" Berkowitz and Begich will both be worthless to AK if they get to Congress. Begich will be a tool of Reid and Schumer, Berkowitz a tool of Pelosi. If your vision of AK is that of one huge nature preserve with no development allowed, then by all means vote for these two. Because whatever Begich and Berkowitz may say about their positions, that is the vision of their national Democratic party handlers. When Pelosi and Reid say "Jump", Berkowitz and Begich will be right there with "How high?" "
