Phyllis Reeva (Kruger) Compton

Phyllis Reeva (Kruger) Compton, 91, of Wasilla, died Nov. 3 in of natural causes. She was born July 21, 1917 in Mankato, Minn.

Phyllis grew up in Washington state, living at times in Sedro Woolley and Granite Falls. She loved the outdoors and the family’s many animals, including a pet goat. Until caused too much trouble and ended up on the dinner table.

Phyllis married and raised her family, two sons and three daughters, in Whatcom County, Wash. The family had a small farm with a menagerie of animals, including a raccoon that sat in a high chair and ate dinner with the family.

A graduate of Western Washington University, Phyllis moved to Alaska in 1989. She enjoyed all Alaska had to offer: snowmachining, ice fishing, four-wheeling and traveling the state.

Phyllis was a long-time contributor to the Frontiersman with her Compton’s Corner that included jokes or short stories and won state fair contests for her storytelling and jokes. She also loved playing the organ at the Wasilla Senior Center.

Phyllis always wanted a log cabin by a lake, and now she is enjoying that cabin with her best friend, her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and is overjoyed to be with her loving daughter Lani and tending the horses in heaven.

Phyllis is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law Robert and Nita Compton of Bellingham, Wash.; Ben and Carol Compton of Glennallen; daughters Winnie Compton of Cody, Wyo., and Janice Lytle of Powell, Wyo.; 13 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren in Alaska, Washington and California. She also has an extended family that includes Sandy Straka; Sue and Nick Swindells; Valerie Patson; and Jeff Arentz.

A remembrance service will be held Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Wasilla, 900 Leatherleaf Road in Wasilla.

Memorials may be sent to the Palmer Salvation Army to help feed families during the holidays or by donating to a local food bank.
