Responding to man in Albuquerque, N.M.

One of the problems with Republicans is, they have, in some instances, started acting like Democrats. One major difference between the two, however, is that Republicans aren’t as likely to resort to name calling. That’s not to say all Republicans are alike as you suggest in your letter. I would not be so ignorant as to think all Democrats are from the same mold either.

Your statement that the First Amendment talks about the separation of church and state, is either inaccurate, or you have a different Constitution than I do. That is one of many good examples of the old saying, “Repeat a lie often enough and it becomes fact”. That misinterpretation was taken from a discussion in the Federalist Papers which, by no means, resulted in it’s inclusion.

Your statement that the Second Amendment “gives” us the right to bear arms is also incorrect. The Bill of Rights serves to preserve those rights we already have, not confer. The Second Amendment, ironically, does not mean “change.” It means exactly what it says, nothing else. If anything, one would have to say, it means “preserve.”

Another assertion that the Constitution is outdated because it was written over 200 years ago, indicates you prescribe to the “living document” theory. That would, of course, leave it to the whimsical interpretations of an activist court.

None of the amendments are based on need, but rather on rights. The Founding Fathers foresaw the need to change the  Constitution when events dictated by inclusion of the means of ratification. It is this needs-based mentality that has resulted in the unlawful erosion of our rights, and continues to threaten our Democratic Republic. If you find the Constitution and its implications threatening, then sir, ratify it.

" An excellent letter. Thank you. "

" Thanks James. The letter addressed more than one topic, and so, I'm not sure what your argument is. The letter was in response to more than one inaccurate statement in the New Mexican's letter, and while it may not meet proper Wordsmith standards, it did properly make correct statements. I readily admit that Republicans have problems. I also acknowledge that the Democrats have plenty of their own as well. This argument has truncated because of the inability of individuals to properly read and understand the letter of interest. "

" well rex thats true when you start off talking about the problems republicans have and then mention the bill of rights in the 3rd paragraph. "

" James, Let me add: The content of my letter simply states that the Bill of Rights preserves rights we already had. The Second Amendment preserves the right to bear arms, brought from England. The 1st. Amendment forbade the government from establishing any form of religion. It did not imply any form of "separation of church and state", which was the core argument in the original context of my letter. This is why we have the Supreme Court, I suppose. People have a difficult time in comprehending what they have just read. "

" Jim from Boston: You just made my point. You just had to resort to name calling, "Gidget Palin". Jim, take a breath and try to think rationally. I think any intelligent person knows there is name calling from all corners. It's a human element that we deal with. National dialog does not come from name calling. It comes from the platform of issues and debates. . I advocate the U.S. Constitution. The size of the World is not an issue in this debate and at least Palin knows there aren't 57 states. That wasn't a Gaff by Obama either. "

" Thanks, James. You are incorrect in suggesting that the first amendment addresses the"Separation of church and state". It forbids the State (Government) from establishing a religion. It was an amendment to prevent the same type religious issues they had in England. It had absolutely nothing to do with the separation thereof. Go back and read more on this issue. "

" To Trapper Creek - Wow - that's uhm PROVING Jim from Boston's Point. Note that Boston has an amazing history and you need to try to remember yours. The Boston Tea Party was prior to the Revolutionary War. Many people from Boston played large roles in that War. So, if we read exactly what you said- you believe that those who fought in the revolutionary war were cowards. That's not very patriotic, especially considering that those are the same people who were instrumental in developing the constitution.Next time, think before you SPEW. "

" the bill of rights is the first 10 ammendments
of the constitution. hence the right to bear arms is referenced separately in the 2nd ammendment
both you and the guy from new mexico are right
2Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
is the text of the 1st ammendment
that seems to cover religion "

"Godget" Palin is more man than you'll ever be, and more woman than youll ever have.
You Bostonians havent shown any guts since the Tea party 200 years ago. "

Jim from Boston wrote on Nov 14, 2008 5:30 AM:

" Not resort to name calling? We just came through an election where Republicans, including Gidget Palin called Barack Obama everything but a child of God.
Lot of name calling on both sides. That's what our national dialog has come to.

You seem to be an advocate of "natural" rights. Well, that is a school of though but not the only one. Social contract advocates out there too. The world is large and even the f the governor of Alaska doesn't have it all figured out. "
