Faith trumps terrorism

Church burnings are supposed to be an ugly part of our not-so-distant past.

A religious, and at times racial, statement, the burning of a place of worship is more than a crime of passion or an acting out of misguided moral or political leanings. Church-burning is terrorism, and it’s a terrorism we’re dismayed to see take hold in our Valley.

Those who participated in Friday’s arson at Wasilla Bible Church are no better than the terrorist half a world away who bombs a mosque in the name of religious jihad. That those inside the local church were unhurt is a blessing. That Wasilla Bible Church is also the place of worship for Gov. Sarah Palin and came under national scrutiny during the recent presidential campaign makes the act more suspicious.

As a nation that was founded on the bedrock principles of freedom to worship and freedom of political expression without fear of reprisal, our heartfelt sympathies go out to members of Wasilla Bible Church, along with our confidence in their faith and resilience.

On Saturday, Palin’s spokesman Bill McAllister issued a statement condemning this terrorist act, perhaps motivated by the “undeserved negative attention” the church received during the campaign. We add our condemnation, as well as a hope that those responsible also be pursued as domestic terrorists as well as arsonists.

“Whatever the motives of the arsonist, the governor has faith in the scriptural passage that what was intended for evil will in some way be used for good,” McAllister says in his statement.

We agree. If the intention in setting fire to Wasilla Bible Church was to alienate and destroy the faith of Palin, her supporters, the church’s membership or all Valley residents, the terrorists will be disappointed. They failed to shake our faith. Wasilla Bible Church meets this morning — as it does every Sunday — albeit at a different location in Wasilla Middle School.

In the meantime, we are hopeful local and federal authorities will find those responsible and take appropriate action to keep this evil from our Valley.

" "Hate crimes are hate crimes and terrorism is terrorism period" I don't disagree with that statement, and certainly it is a reprehensible act, but the rest of your diatribe was way over the top and bordering on hysteria. "

" the burning of any church is absolutely the worst crime against humanity that can be perpatrated on any civilazation. while having a different point of view is fine, stooping to the level of arson of a church (with people inside as this one was) is nothing but ignorance and terrorism. no doubt someone somewhere is relishing the description and showing of their handiwork "

" Yikes! You are in serious need of anger management. Although, you must be pretty fit from all that jumping to conclusions. Have you ever thought of being objective in your evaluations of circumstances? Santa is going to recall your stocking; you don't even rate coal for your comments. "

" I am not a 'Palin Hater' so maybe my views don't count for much - I have criticized her in the past, but I don't see that as hate. I voted for Obama, but also was highly critical of the Christianity expressed in Wright's sermons. So, for what it is worth, please accept the prayers and heartfelt good wishes of an Obama supporter in the lower 48. Faith DOES trump terrorism. Who ever did this represents no other group or person other than him or herself, and is in serious need of healing. Prayers for your Church. "

" Uh, valley resident, first we should wait for the results of the investigation. Maybe it was a hate crime, an electrical fire or some kid on a meth jag.

Why would anyone with a brain advocate arson against a church. It's a disgusting act. That coming from someone in a lower 48 cesspool that has everything from mosques to temples. Ukrainian orthodox, Baptist, Unitarian .. you name it. And in this cesspool we don't vandalize churches. "

    " Valley resident,

You seem to be an agitated individual, and I doubt it is the result of the fire at the church.

It is a criminal act and should be dealt with severly. So I suggest we let the authorities do their jobs and hope that there will be sufficient evidence to prosecute if it was set.

And if the investigation proves it was faulty wiring or something similar, lets look at that to determine ways to prevent future fires..

    Enjoy your holiday's. "

" If the fire had occured at Barack Obama"s place of worship instead of Sarah Palins the liberals would be throwing hysterical charges of "hate crime" and "right wing terrorism" all over. CNN,MSNBC and their attack dogs Mathews and Olbermann would be on it 24 hours a day with their unending tripe.Of course that will not be the case with the Wasilla Church fire. How silent the voices of most of you Palin haters are from your LOWER 48 SEWAGE PITS like N.Y. ,Boston etc. Hate crimes are hate crimes and terrorism is terrorism period. It works both ways libs. "

" I would not go so far as to call those responsible for this fire (if it was indeed arson) terrorists. Palin herself was unwilling to call those who bomb abortion clinics "terrorists", so I think we should just call the person/s responsible (if indeed anyone is guilty of deliberately setting the fire) criminals. "

" So it's "us" agains "them?" How polarizing. What a wonderful attitude you have. You do realize that you speak only for yourself and not for the rest of us, right? You have been very naughty and Santa will be bringing you coal for your stocking. Very unChristian in your attitude. "

    Dear Valley Resident,

Why are you intent on thinking it was aimed at Sarah? Curious how your mind works. Could it have been set by Palin supporters to keep her in the limelight? I am not suggesting that is the case, but it is possible, just as possible as your statement saying it was aimed at Sarah.

Get over your misguided thoughts, wake up smell the coffee. Thank you. "

" Where are all the Palin haters when it comes to condemng an act of terrorism directed toward Palin and her Christian Faith? No comments from the lower 48 sewage pits like Boston and New York? You wacko hpocrites nauseate me. "

This may be a case of arson and I doubt it was specifically aimed at your "unethical governor" or her faith.

It may have been result of faulty wiring, but that does not change the fact that arson is wrong if it is arson. Catch and punish the guilty ones. "

" Oh yes, Ben, there have been plenty of mosque bombings, recently and throughout history. Churches, synagogues, mosques. . .they have all been targets. Some from 'outsiders' and others as part of internecine religious hatred. Hatred knows no particular religion or politics. Even as this is a destructive act, it is also an opportunity to draw together, not divide, as brothers against hatred. The very sad fact is that all places of worship have been a lightning rod for hatred over the centuries. The challenge is to not respond in hatred. "
