Board could boost CHS band

PALMER — The Colony High School marching band could receive the remainder of funding necessary to get its musicians to President-elect Barack Obama’s inauguration from the Mat-Su Borough School District.

The decision will be made Monday during a special meeting of the Mat-Su Borough School Board.

School Board President Jim Colver said he called the meeting in an attempt to send the band on a “once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

The Colony High School marching band — the only marching band in the state — received an invitation to play in the Jan. 20 inaugural parade in Washington, D.C.

The band is stoked to go, director Jamin Burton said, but there’s just one problem. Taking an entire high school marching band more than 4,000 miles to the nation’s capital isn’t cheap. The total price tag comes in at around $80,000.

So far, the band has received $20,000 from parents and community members, and has raised a total of about $55,000 through “just about every type of fundraising you could do,” Burton said.

Since the invitation, however, travel rates have gone up and the band needs an additional $25,000.

That’s where the school board comes in. According to a tentative agenda for its Monday meeting, the board will look into appropriating funds for the band’s travel.

If the money is approved and the band gets the green light to mark time to Washington, D.C., the group will be part of a select few that make it to the big show.

In a recent letter to the band, Inaugural Parade President Peter Gage says, “We had a record number of applicants, so your selection is a testament to your organization’s talent and enthusiasm. Your participation will help make this inauguration truly historic.”

The school board meeting is open to the public and will take place at 6 p.m. at the school district’s administration building, at 501 N. Gulkana St., Palmer.

" I would be willing to give all of the money for the trip. All I would want in return is for enough of the students (and parents if necessary) to sign over their PFD checks for 2009 to make up the amount, along with a very modest 7% interest. This way the students can attend the festivities without ripping off the tax payers and at the same time they get a lesson in economics (and how life really works!) "

" Are you kidding me? I guarantee you that if other groups had known that the school board was going to give them $25,000 they would have applied to march in the parade. You know going in you have to pay for it yourself , you fund raise, parents pay the rest. How is this different than any other school trip? Good luck to the fundraising kids and parents, if I come across anyone out there raising money I"ll donate. Please don't use our district money for a specific trip involving one school and a handful of kids. "

" It is irresponsible to give a select number of students this money, I'm surprised that Jim Colver is even considering it. I"m sure many students see their trips out of state as a once in a lifetime opportunity. If we have extra money in the budget lets vote about where it would best be spent. "

" What don't don't you get. Just because it is historic does not justify spending public education dollars. My nephew is in student government. His class followed the election from start to finish. Maybe the school district should pay for his class to go so they can see it through to the end and Obama's beginning. No matter how you spin it it is not fair for the district to allocate public education money for one group of students and not another. maybe we should send drama club to watch a Broadway play. And the football team to the superbowl "

" Hey I am all for them going so much so I have donated money on several occasions to their cause. My point is why should they get special treatment when all the others have to raise their own money. I did not hear the school board step up when Wasilla girls bball traveled to Juneau. Be realistic, yes it is historic and I hope they go but if the district has the surplus money it should be shared evenly. "

" I have yet to see one band member or parent fundraising in our community. Get out there and get to work and earn your way! No tax dollars for extracaricular activities. Do not open that pandoras box for bailouts. What will be next? "

" Another high school band is going outside during spring break. The trip is being paid for by parents and fund raisers. At about $3,500/student, they did not ask for this kind of subsidy. The Colony district which is as a whole largely anti-tax should not be treated any different. The funding should be spent on local projects and events. Don't tell me if some of the more apathetic parents got off their lazy rear ends that some sort of solution could be found. It's always the few that do all the work. "

Any band student/parent would be glad to meet and pick up a check.

Thank you so much for the folks from all over this state that have supported this! "

" Why should my tax dollars go to send the band to Washington. If the district has extra money for this why not use that money for new computers, maybe school repairs, why not use that extra money to hire another teacher at my kids school so her class size can be reduced to a more acceptable level. If you give the band this money then you better offer it to choir, drama, football, baseball on and on and on. Each band member should have to pay their own way. "

" when Su Valley sent a marching band to Wash DC for an inaugral parade...what a proud moment that was and money came from all over the state to send those kids. No one complained, we were all just PROUD! The word went out over radio and TV and those who could sent a few bucks. Do they gave an account set upanywhere? "

" Maybe Washington has some Band Bailout money? Or how about some help from the Alaska turns 50 years old people? Didn't each one of these kids receive 3200 bucks from the state of alaska this quarter? "
