Mushers' paradise

Courtesy photos Ken Anderson cossed the finish line at 11 a.m. Sunday to win the 2009 Knik 200 sled dog race. Anderson bested the field of 40, arriving at Knik Lake 20 minutes before second-place finisher Ray Reddington Jr. Anderson arrived at the halfway marker in Swentna in second place about a half hour behind Mike Barrnett, who was leading the race at the time. Sub-zero temperatures slowed racers considerably, said Chris Matthews, who watched the race. Matthews said that the top times this year were more than two hours behind the pace of last year’s record time set by Ryan Redington. These dogs stay warm and active during the race while, in the next photo, ice cakes the beard of Shane Goose.
