Thanks, Sarah and family To the editor: In the wake of what must be described as one of the most ridiculous presidential campaigns in my lifetime, I have to say “Thank you” to the most refreshing candidate — and her family — for high office in recent history. Until early fall of 2008, very few folks in the continental United States even knew Mrs. Palin and her lovely family existed. In an election season featuring some of the poorest examples of political personalities ever assembled, the entry of Sarah and her family was like a breath of fresh air to those of us who still deeply believe in God, family and truth. Few of us in the conservative persuasion will forget the day when Sarah’s running mate, the erstwhile, occasional maverick John McCain introduced her to the American public. To be introduced to a self-made, hard-working American woman who is so representative of what we common folk admire was an event that will not soon be forgotten. I guess we who admired and supported the “Hot Chick and the Old Dude” knew the eventual outcome, but for one brief shining moment, us average folk thought we had a chance to hold off the reign of terror the “savior,” our soon to be president and his cronies represent. Here before us stood a candidate that we could relate to. There before us stood an intelligent and dynamic woman along with her family as they were presented to the electorate. To us average folks, the Palins were easy to identify with. Here stood a family that refused to hide its strengths and weaknesses, and did so with grace and style. Before us stood an example of husband and wife supporting one another whether it be a quest for elective office or success in a snowmobile race across the Alaska wilderness. We saw pride in the eyes of two parents as the military service of a son was discussed. We were allowed to see love shown by parents and siblings to a newborn child, who in the eyes of so many in our society would be described as “flawed” and the refusal to conceal an unwed daughter with child was a testament to a good and forthright family. Equally important to those of us who are proud to testify our love of the Lord was the testimony of the Palins to an often hostile and unforgiving press. I guess I could go on in great length about lost opportunities and injustices served upon the Palin family. Instead, I’d like to say “Thank you” to the Palins. (Hope to see you back on the political scene the next go around-and good luck Todd in your next big snowmobile race. Dan Evans Tallahassee, Fla.
