WASILLA — Zach Richards didn’t even have a chance to enjoy the moment.

Just seconds after the Palmer senior captain scored the go-ahead goal during the final minutes of regulation, Soldotna posted the game-tying score and went on to claim a 4-3 overtime victory over the Moose in the North Star Conference Hockey Tournament championship game at the Curtis C. Menard II Memorial Ice Arena on Saturday.

“We were down but we felt like we could come back,” said Soldotna head coach Aaron Swanson, who led the Stars to their first NSC title since 1998.

Soldotna sophomore Brad Duwe scored the game-winner with 2:16 left in overtime. SoHi captain Daniel Markstrom set up the play, firing a shot on net as he crossed the right circle in the Palmer zone. Duwe was in front of the net to knock the puck in.

Soldotna needed just 23 seconds to answer Richards’ score, an unassisted tally that came with 2:37 left in the third. On the ensuing shift, Soldotna sophomore Brandon Fisher walked the puck up to the left circle and flipped a shot into the upper shelf of the Moose net.

“It shocked them,” said Soldotna sophomore Brad Duwe, who was named the conference’s player of the year following the game. “Coach was telling us, keep fighting, keep fighting.”

The game ended in regulation locked at 3-3, and it took Soldotna nearly six minutes of the eight-minute overtime frame to post the game-winner, but the Stars felt Fisher’s goal was the game-changer.

“Richards’ goal was the momentum swinger, potentially, but our guys didn’t let it bring them down, and we went and got the goal back,” Swanson said.

Richards gave the Moose the temporary lead after cashing in on an outstanding individual effort. As Soldotna tried to skate the puck out of their own zone, Richards poked the puck away from the last defenseman back, and when he laid out to take possession of the puck, Richards was able to knock a shot into the lower left side of the net.

“He worked hard on the forecheck, picked up a turnover and slipped it by (the goalie),” Palmer head coach Brad Hanson said. “That was a great play by him.”

Duwe led the Stars with a pair of goals in the game and Markstrom added a power-play goal and two assists.

Duwe gave the Stars the early lead at the tail end of the first period when he turned a Palmer turnover into a Soldotna score. As Palmer tried to work the puck out of its own zone, skating the final seconds off the clock, Duwe dashed in, and with his stick, the sophomore poked the puck away. Almost immediately, Duwe put a quick shot on the Palmer net. As the puck popped off the pads of Moose goaltender Will Rauchenstein and bounced in front of the crease, Duwe was able to knock in his own rebound despite falling chest first on the ice.

“I just shot the puck in and it was a big blur,” Duwe said. “I got up and saw it going in.”

Soldotna had the lead going into the first intermission, even though the Moose controlled play during the first period, outshooting Soldotna 11-7.

“Palmer came out tonight and really took it to us early,” Swanson said. “They controlled the play for the first half of the period.”

Junior Kyle Blakeman and sophomore Jared Hanson each scored within the first five minutes of the second period to give the Moose the 2-1 lead.

Blakeman put Palmer on the board just 1:28 into the second when he redirected an Andrew Ferguson shot. With Blakeman parked in front of the Soldotna goal, Ferguson threw a shot in from the point. The puck deflected off Blakeman’s stick and past Soldotna goalie Steven Kendrick.

About three minutes later, Hanson gave the Moose the 2-1 advantage. After Hanson’s older brother Michael won a battle behind the net and sent a centering pass in front of the goal, Jared took advantage of open space, walked the puck up and fired a quick shot that beat Kendrick on his stick side.

“In the second period, we were eight or nine minutes into the period before we got off a shot,” Swanson said.

Markstrom tied the game for the Stars with a power play tally late in the period. As Soldotna skated on its third power play chance of the game, Fisher moved the puck across the zone to Markstrom, who snuck a shot past Rauchenstein low and on the goalie’s stick side.

The title game featured a pair of teams that are not accustomed to winning NSC championships. By advancing to the title game, Palmer earned its first state tourney berth since 1996 and was looking for its first NSC crown since 1991. Soldotna has not won the title since 1998, but finished second in 1999, 2000, 2003 and 2008.

Despite the loss, Brad Hanson was very proud of the accomplishments of his team.

“I’m extremely excited about this season, our seniors, how they turned this program around,” Hanson said. “I’m proud of everybody that stepped on the ice tonight. They worked as hard as they possibly could. Anytime you lose a game like this it’s agonizing. But fortunately for them, they get to play some more hockey and have another opportunity to show how good they are.”

Both teams will begin state tourney play on Thursday at the Menard Arena. The 4A brackets will be released by ASAA today.

" Glad all the real crap that goes on in a locker room is kept hush, hush. Half them kids wouldn't even play if they didn't love the game, how to hang in their boys!
Bill you deserve coach of the year, don't let anyone any of these fools doubt your coaching abilities "

" yeh lifting weights in the offseason and just great but its the players that display the coaching it does not take our coach yelling at us to play we take what were coached and try to put it in effect in a game. Sturdevant won the award because his players took what they learned in practice and kept themselves in the top three after losing 12 seniors. The other coaches voted to give sturdevant the award because of that not because he yelled at his players "

" Thank you coach V. The kids were strictly told that they could not practice as a Palmer High School team until the ASAA regulations allowed, however some did play on other leagues during the offseason. Hanson was there as much as he could be. And I do also think that the SoHi head coach has done a fantastic job this season and deserves his honor that he recieved. "

" I'm someone who has been involved in youth athletics in the Valley for 20 years. Honestly, I'm done with it. The worst problem in athletics these days are the parents - Colony parents blaming the refs for their kids' actions. Palmer parents saying their coach mandates workouts. Wasilla parents complaining about their coach. My word, people. You all should be ashamed. Let the kids play! At this level, it should be about the kids. Instead, it's turned into a blame game among parents. It should be about the kids but unfortunately, the parents ruin that. "

ASSA regs wrote on Feb 9, 2009 9:52 AM:

" So let me get this clear. Hanson had his players working in the off season? Was it mandatory? Was he there working this? If so he violated ASAA rules and it should be penalized. Now, If they kids did this on their own then it is OK. But I know for a FACT they were told to do this or risk not playing. My kid is on the team. He does not deserve to be coach of the year. I would give it to Steve instead. "

Vote for the coach wrote on Feb 9, 2009 9:49 AM:

" Coaches voting was donew for the season not what happens in the region playoffs. Its what is done as a whole with the team. Hanson had the talent of kids and MacSwain was the main reason. Bill had lost much from last year and stayed in the top 3. That is good coaching and patience. Plus what they display on the rink is what is seen. Hanson throws fits, Bill is calm and smooth. Respect wins points in everyones eyes. No respect you look like Colony! "

" Brad is not responsible for the building of that team. Those players have been in the system for years. The gong show on the bench in the championship was rediculous-2 penalties which cost them the game for to many men on the ice, coaches yelling at each other for who's responsibility it was-give me a break! Bill doesn't pull his goalie until 34 seconds left in the game for extra attacker when not only they had a powerplay but a timeout in Sohi's end and as you watch the bench no instruction on what to do. "

" Im not saying that Coach Sturdevant did not do a good job on coaching his boys, which he really has done a good job, but I just think that Hanson has done a far more than superior job this year with his boys. In the off season, he always made sure that there were at lesat 10-15 hockey players in the room everyday lifting, getting stronger, getting better. And during season, he made players , which, without Hansons coaching, would have been playing for themselves. but Hanson made this a team game. He deserves this honor. "

" I'm a New Moose Fan, but been around the game as a player, coach and official for about 40 years.

Brad Hanson is a good, solid coach.

Let's not forget he has a 'little' behind the scenes help in Steve MacSwain and Corey Millan.

Together, they place emphasis on good skating, puckhandling, teamwork, and putting the puck in the net; not macho play, cheap shots, late hits, blaming officials, etc...

Soldotna appears to play the same game.

Two top teams in the conference, hmmm.

Got get 'um at State, Moose! "

Palmer will come back harder at state with the return of Dylan D.
After a cheapshot hit by Frank #14 from Kenai took a cheapshot at him and seperated his shoulder.

He was a missing link out there and you could tell. But hats off to Steven Acker. (Sorry if I messed up his name)
He stepped up big last night to try and fill in. "

To Brad Hanson, what a great job you have done over the last few years to build that program to what it is today. And to the seniors who were there doing the down times, hold your heads up because you are the ones stuck with it, never gave up and helped get the team to the top. Great job Palmer and good luck next week. "

I've watched Michael and Jared Hanson and Zach Richards grow up and it was a joy to see them have such a phenomenal season. You boys, along with the rest of your team, are talented and driven and definitely deserving of your accomplishments this season. And, Brad ... Congratulations on this season.
