Gun control should be a state decision

Too often we see one-size-fits-all legislation and the latest effort to reign in guns — HR45 (Blair Holt’s Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009) is an example.

Introduced by U. S. Rep. Bobby Rush (D-IL) and named for a young man on a bus who stood in front of a thug firing a gun and took bullets that would have hit a young girl. Blair Holt died from his wounds.

Nobody on God’s green earth should have allowed that gangbanger to ever have a gun. Blair Holt would be alive today.

But making people give up fingerprints to own a gun is assuming they will do something wrong.

There’s nothing wrong, however, with making people register for weapons that aren’t traditionally used for hunting — pistols, automatic weapons, .50-caliber bores, sawed-off barrels.

And if any of the above are stolen, they should be reported to the authorities immediately so the cops know those weapons are in the wrong hands.

If you want a pistol for home protection, you shouldn’t have anything to hide by registering the weapon. If you like to take an autoload to the shooting range, so be it, but register it.

So, some parts of Rush’s bill makes sense.

But to tell parents their 14-year-old isn’t ready to go bird hunting with a .410 is absolutely wrong. Hunting is a great time for parents to get further involved in their child’s sense of responsibility. Not just in gun safety issues. Shooting sports can also be a great tool in teaching young people the importance of taking care of the land and its game. Heck, if their aim is good, it’s a fine way to teach cooking skills.

The yahoos who shoot holes in roadside signs have no business ever owning a weapon, not even a slingshot.

It’s no wonder, though, that a man in Illinois cites a gangster shooting as a reason to want more control over guns. Same with Washington, D.C., East L.A., Philadelphia, Miami and the list goes on.

In Alaska, we have our share of shooting deaths, but they pale in comparison to the number of people who own weapons and use them responsibly to hunt, subsist, and yes, protect their families, homes and property.

The Palmer Gun Show continues today at the state fairgrounds. Stop by and see for yourself what is available, talk to dealers and customers. Then contact your senator or representative in Washington, D.C., and tell them what you think about the  proposed law.

" I've heard people saying they are going to boycott the businesses that advertise in the Frontiersman because they got the impression that the newspaper was advocating gun registration. Is there any truth to that allegation? "

" if a weapon is used in a crime, it should be reason for capitol punishment, and public at that. the only deterrent seems to be "in your face" type .
in those countries where drunk driving is punishable by death, they don't seem to have repeat offenders! "

" Oh, it's a 'state issue' now? The 2nd Amendmend of the U.S. Constitution? So what else in the Constitution is a 'state issue'? Freedom of speech maybe? Freedom to assemble? Freedom of religion? Are those also 'state issues'? "

" Yes, exactly what John Dean has been saying for some time. It's a state issue.

However, I don't know if Republicans want it resolved since they lose one of their great talking points for agitating the peeps. "

" If we register our guns, criminals will be afraid to steal them and shoot innocent people an signs? Anyone have some extra braincells for the writer of this editorial? Your intentions are good, but will not work with criminals. Keep trying to work out the worlds problems. But next time don't be working on law abiding citizens, work on the criminals. "

" They will not publish Hr 45 because they can't afford the news print. This article was an editorial and as such the writer does not have to disclose his or her identity, it's not uncommon. An editorial always expresses the opinions and views of the editors and publishers. An editorialist usually doesn't have the intestinal fortitude to pen their name to their drivel. In this case they couldn't be more misinformed. "

" The Frontiersman and ADN have two things in common. You are both owned by Outside companies and you both favor trashing our Constitution by favoring HR45 which as well as forcing compulsory registration will make you a felon if you do not supply change of address information within 60 days among other things. This draconian measure is a nightmare. Why don't you publish the full text of HR45 and then take a READER POLL to determine how ALASKANS view this horrendous freedom robbing bill? Will you do it? We folks who live here dare you!!!! "

" The Dems have a historical record on not caring about approval from the constituents when it comes to passing anti-gun restrictive laws. It's for 'the good of the nation' you see and they have been tasked to take care of us dumb little people. It's a 'scare tactic' when others say 'Obama is going to make it happen'? I hardly think so...it's precedence. "

" the HR45 has not committee nor co sponsor as of last week, those selling guns are screaming how it will pass and that Obama will make it happen, more conservative scare! Typical BUSH, GOP agenda. The Gun show is also today and was jammed yesterday as well as the Sportsman Warehouse, people looking for guns! THe ammo is the problem and low to no stock all over the nation. "

" Nothing wrong with making people register guns that are not used for hunting. Are you crazy? The 2nd amendment has nothing to do with bearing arms only if they are used for hunting. There should be no reason to register any guns. If you're a felon you shouldn't be able to own a gun, but any other law abiding citizen of age should have that right. End of story. Cops can't protect you or your family if you need it. Your opinion is heading us down the road to the government taking our guns. No thanks. "
