Plan would ruin pristine area

To the editor:

There is a public recreation area on the north side of the Knik River Valley, accessible by an unimproved dirt road at the end of Maud Road in the Mat-Su Borough. This is a pristine area where people can go and enjoy camping in the summer, adjacent to several lakes where for years swans have nested and raised their young. Moose come down to feed in the shallow waters of the swamps. Sheep come down in the spring to have their young at the base of the cliffs, adjacent to a proposed firing range. Then as the snows recede, they migrate to the grassy slopes on the mountain to feed.

This is all going to change since the Department of Natural Resources has opted to build an open shooting range at the base of Jim Creek Canyon, where the sheep are prevalent.

So folks, don’t plan on camping in this beautiful area and expect to see any wildlife — including the swans and their young, the sheep, the bears, the moose etc. What a shame, to lose such an area for all except the ones who want to go and fire their weapons, at anytime without any monitoring by anyone. This will surely ruin camping and wildlife viewing for anyone who wishes to enjoy it. This area is also used for wintertime sports by the public.

You will be able to hear echoing of rifle fire through the Knik River Valley as far out as the Old Glenn Highway. Residents and outdoor lovers, enjoy.

" Once again: the KRPUA gun ranges are in direct competition with private, permitted enterprise such as the Birchwood/Izaak Walton range.
No rational explanation has been given, that justifies entitlement to FREE public land, and access, and clearing, and permitting costs, etc. for exclusive, private use.
Lastly, DNR has yet to show how their shooting ranges and easements and all associated costs, will economically benefit the state or the public.
How to craft bad policy: write a law ensuring the legality of uncivil behavior and poor decision making skills.... "

ever seen the side of McKinley?, or how about Everest?, or any of those areas that these so-called enviro junkies go to "Wreckreate" they leave a bigger mess than the rednecks with their old washing machine target.
It doesn't matter where you go, who it is, the fact is: there will always be People that are all scummy trashy sorts, with no concern for anyone else. "

" Education is the key word for these sites and I believe DNR and DPS will work together along with organizations willing to police the area. In the KRPUA Plan, DNR removed target shooting from the lower Knik River and is working to create areas that will be easier to educate users on safe gun useage. There were MANY public comment periods in the Butte, Wasilla, and Anchorage to address all of the concerns of the residents and users of the KRPUA. I and my family support the efforts made to correct and educate the public. "

    " truth4all - not all ATV riders are white trash redneck gun nuts - we ride out their to see the scenery - have a picnic lunch, and enjoy this land of Alaska - not to leave trash or tear the place up - be careful when generalizing or putting labels - some of us have been taught to respect the outdoors and teach others the same.     " to truth4all;
I'm against this unregulated range. But I'm also NRA, enjoy riding quads with my kids, etc. My wife and I work hard for our money and I can run a mile only slightly slower than when I was in the Army. "White trash, fat, idiot' blah blah blah......whatever. Take another hit and stick to the cartoons and video games. "

" I guess the state has decided to choose an area to let the white trash redneck gun nuts have dominion over. Face it, these fat out of shape idiots only go where 4 wheelers or old beater 4 wheel drive vehicles will take them. Give them somewhere on the lowlands to have their trashy fun and leave the mountains to those of us that are willing to work a little harder for our recreation. "

" Tara - Sorry I didn't quite say it right, I didn't mean to suggest for you to invest in it, but was hopeful your idea caught on and got some people interested who might be able to see an investment opportunity there. The sad thing is that this wouldn't do away with the crazies who feel they're deprived of their rights if they can't shoot wherever they want. The gun range at Maud Road wouldn't do the trick either. As long as there is no troopers out here, things might get wilder than they are now. "

" To "I live here," thanks for the comment. I was only putting the suggestion out there. I'm sorry to say I do not have the capital to build a firing range, but I thought some enterprising person might be interested, or even better our city government might pursue the idea. If we could pour money into a big sports complex in Wasilla, it seems within reasonable expectations we could have a nice indoor shooting range to serve the community, too. It might discourage outdoor dumping and some of the problems that seem to come along with random outdoor shooting. "

" Cathy Hummel: All the way at Buffalo Mine Road? I'm surprised he wasn't dumping his trash in the Butte? Is the Butte not good enough for dumping trash anymore? We must be getting too uppity around here. Seriously - lots of people around here have been watching for these creeps. Trail cams are sprouting everywhere. "

" Tara, a year'round indoor shooting range would most likely be a great investment for someone. I'd love to use it. But I have a feeling the kind of people who've been plinkin' around here want to be sure they can do it anytime, at no cost, and have a beer while they're at it. It's hard to change that kind of thinking, but I hope that others will encourage you to pursue an indoor range. "

I'm an avid firearm enthusiast, lifetime member of the NRA and enjoy target shooting. But that area back there is an absolute garbage heap. A more structured design for ATVs and such might foster a friendly environment that draws more people and less of a tendency for trash-dumpers (who like to dump when they think nobody is looking) "

" Why can't we have some cool indoor shooting range instead of messing up the outdoors? As much as it is fun to shoot, it seems a shame to litter and spoil an area just for the sake of some target practice. I wish someone would build a really nice indoor shooting range that people could enjoy all year around. "

" Sad thing is, Mr. Hermon tells it like it was and like it should be. The State of Alaska has abandoned the area for years. Now, instead of fixing it, they're legitimizing the raping of this world-class environment. Why in the world would they build a firing range before even putting up trash dumpsters and portapotties in the KRAPPA is beyond comprehensioin. "

PEOPLE ARE AND HAVE BEEN SHOOTING BACK THERE FOR YEARS!!! It's loaded full of trash! Kids party back there and leave thier mess everywhere! Cars are abandoned there! I occasionally see somebody camping back there and I think they must be out of thier mind! There's hardly anything left to ruin, George! "
