Runners chase titles at regions

SOLDOTNA — A little style never hurt anyone.

Sitting in their hotel room Friday night, the members of Colony High School’s 3,200-meter girls relay team was looking for a way to gain a slight edge on the competition in Saturday’s opening running event at the 2009 Northern Lights Conference Championships track and field meet at Skyview High School in Soldotna.

The four girls — Abby Jahn, Taylor Stewart, Alyssa Hutchins and Maria Wick — decided to go with matching T-shirts emblazoned with their self-given team nickname. Speed, not spelling, is apparently the girls’ strong suit.

After whipping off warm-ups touting the “Fierceome Foursome,” the four Colony underclassmen whipped the field, opening the finals with an impressive victory over rival Wasilla. The race was in doubt until Wick put the team in front with a pass on the final turn of the third leg, then Stewart held on to give the Knights an automatic berth in next week’s state meet.

“It’s what we’ve been training for all season was to win regions, because this is our favorite race,” Wick said.

As for the shirts, the girls said they may modify them for next week’s races.

“We may have to switch them up a bit,” Wick said.

Stewart was the top scorer for the Knights, which finished fourth overall. The freshman phenom also posted victories in the long jump and triple jump to earn three berths at state. Knights junior Gaynor Johansen was the region’s top discus thrower with a heave of 102 feet, 9 inches.

The Kenai Central girls used a region record-setting victory in the final event of the day, the 1,600 relay, to earn a narrow victory over the Kodiak Bears. Kenai’s Lierin Flanagan won the 100, 200 and 400 — and also anchored the final relay — to earn athlete of the year honors. Kenai coach Tim Sandahl won the girls’ coach of the year award.

The Kenai 1,600-meter relay team of Kristi Louthan, Shaynee DeVito, Bailey Beeson and Flanagan posted a time of 4:09.88 to best the previous region record by nearly a second. Wasilla’s relay team from the 2000 season had held the previous record.

Kenai won the meet with a total of 102 points, while Kodiak finished with 98. Wasilla (90) was third, followed by Colony (84), Soldotna (69), Skyview (54), Palmer (16), Houston (9) and Homer (1).

Wasilla boys

place third

The Kodiak boys used a dominant performance by Trevor Dunbar — the nation’s top high school distance runner — to easily win their fourth consecutive NLC crown with 164 team points. Kenai Central was a distant second with 66. Wasilla finished with 64 points to place third, Soldotna was fourth (61), Colony place fifth (53), Palmer was sixth (47), Houston placed seventh (34), Skyview was eighth (28) and Homer placed ninth with six points.

Dunbar was named the boys’ athlete of the year, while his father, Marcus, picked up coach of the year honors.

The younger Dunbar won the 3,200, 1,600 and 800 meters, and also helped the Bears to a win in the 3,200 relay to cap a busy 4-for-4 weekend.

“It feels awesome,” Dunbar said after the meet.

Dunbar’s only mistake of the meet came before he left Kodiak. Expecting warm, sunny conditions, the senior packed light, neglecting to bring even a sweatshirt to the mainland. With conditions Saturday switching frequently from bright sunshine to rain and wind, he was forced to borrow a Kenai football sweatshirt from Kardinals jumper Nikita Naumoff.

“I felt a little self conscious every time I went to the podium,” Dunbar joked about his borrowed attire.

Colony junior Matt Jaronik wasn’t feeling a bit self conscious following his second win of the afternoon. But he was a bit wet.

Jaronik held off a challenge from Kodiak’s Karsten Schick in a race that started in sunshine and ended in showers — a fact Jaronik said he didn’t mind a bit.

“I was kinda nice to have those showers in the back stretch,” he said.

Jaronik also won the boys’ 200 meters earlier in the day, narrowly edging 100-meter champion John Scoresby of Palmer.

“It feels good, especially getting to go against all the schools in the region,” Jaronik said.

Houston’s Dustin Dodds also earned an individual title, surging from behind to catch Soldotna’s Chase Jensen over the final two hurdles.

“It was just the extra push to pass him in the last 100 meters,” Dodds said after sprawling on his back in front of a group of cheering family and friends.

Although spent from his last-second heroics, Dodds said the pain required to win the grueling race was well worth the effort. “It feels kinda cool.”

Wasilla’s John Knowles dominated the throwing events on the boys side, picking up easy wins in both the shot and discus. Still a junior, Knowles bested the field by more than 2 feet in the shot put with a throw of 46 feet, 11.5 inches. Knowles then really turned things on in the discus, hurling the disc 165 feet even to beat Soldotna’s Nate Strieby by more than 10 feet. Knowles’ discus throw was the state’s best this season.

The state meet will be held Friday and Saturday at Lathrop High School in Fairbanks.

" If you noticed there were 100 s kids pushing themselves to the limit. Many of our kids finished well. Our child finished in the top 3, as did his boys team at Wasilla. We understand why the win will just have to be something we celebrate with him. There just are too many kids competing to think the paper can cover all the story lines. By the way this is something that happens all the time with small papers covering small time sports. Over the years this has happened countless times with the teams here. "

" Oh please and your so perfect. Why is it we hear more complaining from Colony related bloggers than any other school. Moose incident at Colony middle school. Hockey team fiasco during hockey season. Want some cheese with that whine. So some freelance writer messed up. Did it get fixed on the net and a correction in the paper? Do you expect everything to be perfect all the time. Never a mistake. Boo Hoo. "

" you're being pretty hard on those Colony folks.
Seems that reporter actually SPOKE to the girls interviewed. Hmmm. Hard to confuse them among "hundreds of kids and no bib numbers", right?
If a reporter is going to actually call himself a reporter, then let's report the story and put some effort into the facts. Job was pretty half way done. Sad. "

" Read the by line folks. Neither the reporter or photographer are Newspaper employees. It appears the photographer works for the Kenai paper and the writer is a freelancer. You colony folks should lighten up at least your getting some coverage. Never see your teams in the ADN. Besides I know a couple of sports reporters and they say that is real hard when there are 100's of kids and no bib numbers. "

" Amen! These girls did a tremendous job at Regions and really deserve a pat on the back, not a stab at their spelling error for goodness sake! That race was pure hard work and sweat, it was awesome! Too bad our valley reporter didn't see it in his heart to put a more congratulatory slant on the story, and get Sydney's name right. Our little Colony Track family is loud and proud of our kids! "

" Sydney Stewart, not Taylor was the runner who passed Wasilla and gave Colony the victory. As for spelling, you're looking at 4.0 students. In your article YOU misspelled fiercesome. Let's be positive, PLEASE, and next time be sure to get the athletes correct. Those who work hard to win a regional race deserve to get the credit for it. "

Such a disservice to those girls wrote on May 17, 2009 1:01 PM:

" You send a reporter down there to cover this story, interview the girls- which we appreciate! But then he gets SYDNEY Stewart confused with her sister TAYLOR. Sydney was the one on the relay team. SHE was the one did so well in that relay and deserves recognition with her teammates. Please remember that these kids are hurt when you mistake their names in the paper. Taylor Steward did a tremendous job also, but in the jumping events. Now your (hopefully) coming correction will be buried in the paper and Sydney's fans will miss it. "
