Paper too far to the right

Published on Saturday, May 16, 2009 8:39 PM AKDT

To the editor:

It appears to me that you have taken a very sharp turn to the right since the departure of Frank Amaduri and Mark Kelso, who were exceptional editors that made a noticeable improvement in the unbiased editorial quality of the Frontiersman during the several years prior to the arrival of the previous editor and his present successor.

An informed diversity of opinion is what nurtures American democracy, and local newspapers have been the main source of information from the very start.

Two letters to the editor in the May 12 Frontiersman express opposition to Rev. Howard Bess’ biblical interpretations concerning the Old Testament events, and his views on homosexuality, politics and his “...farcical claims and out right lies and blasphemy...” Expressing different opinions is a good thing, however, the idea that Bess’ article have no place in the Faith section of the newspaper is not true. I would remind the Frontiersman and the righteous letter that faith is not confined to their version of Christianity. Faith is the foundation of all religions as well as the hopes and dreams of most people.

As an up and coming Secular Humanist, I have faith that the reasoning abilities and efforts of man will continue to improve the security, comfort and emotional maturity of the human species — which has been occurring ever since we achieved self-consciousness, especially after the Enlightenment. The establishment of science led to the civilized modern culture we have been “blessed” with through the efforts of our predecessors.

The local newspaper in a sense belongs to all of us who live here. It is our news, and to some degree it represents us.

It should remain fair and impartial, and committed to reporting all views. It should not be politicized, slanted, and biased in reporting. "

Where is the loyal opposition that, once upon a time, was worth talking and listening to? I am merely waiting to hear some good ideas, of some substance, expressed with respect and sanity for a change. "

And, to John, I would offer a reply, but what you have said doesn't amount to anything.

I still would like to understand why others believe as they do. Not by the same arrogant insults, and tiresome posturing of the likes of Rush Limbaugh, but instead by some honest attempts toward engaging in well-supported, logical, discussions. "
