Fairness should prevail in Faith columns

To the editor:

I was surprised to see the policy of the Frontiersman change to limit our Constitutional First Amendment right to free speech based on not castigating one segment of society.

The right to criticize what is wrong openly is the very foundation of this amendment. Ironically the Frontiersman used to allow people the ability to discuss both sides of various biblical topics and theologies. Howard Bess submitted many “pro-homosexuality” articles.

Apparently your new change in submission policy is really stating only politically correct biblical theologies are allowed. You’ll allow the most liberal and distorted biblical viewpoints to be permitted. Bess was allowed his viewpoint, but the opposite, widely taught biblical seminary viewpoints are to be suppressed?

I don’t know Mr. Hamman, but I read his article. Never once in that article did Mr. Hamman call for hating people who committed homosexual acts nor for cruelty against them as suggested by the letter to the editor from Shonti Elder. The Billy Graham Association 2009 campaign focusing on end times has taken the same position as Mr. Hamman, stating the rapid acceptance and rise in homosexuality, biblically identified as a sin, is a sign Christians are living in the last days.

The very basis of morality is to identify sin and teach against embracing it. I cannot for one moment think of a person in any sinful lifestyle who would not feel criticized or chasten when his sin was revealed as such, for this is the very nature of self-justification. Not allowing submission in fear it will chastise one segment of society is ridiculous.

Someone having various sexual partners while dating could be offended when told God says fornication is wrong. And the gossipper on television and in various magazines or tabloids would be offended when told their career was an affront to the living God. Ah, but you said any “one segment of society,” which would also include the murderer, pedophile, thief, adulterer, those practicing witchcraft, abusing drugs, drunken, and/or filled with selfish ambition. These would most undoubtedly feel criticized when told their lifestyle was biblically wrong.

Not offend sinners? There is no such Christian article. Either cancel the entire Faith column or allow it to equally present the truth as taught in seminary schools and the opposite viewpoint. But limit it for non-offensiveness, then cancel my subscription.

" When was the last time a minister, person of faith, or politician called for legally allowable discrimination against fornicators and gossipers? Where are the public demonstrations, mean-spirited signs, chanting, arguing, advertising, and preaching to elected officials over keeping fornicators and gossipers out of the workplace, neighborhoods, and from receiving the same basic rights and civil protections that we who are so much more righteous enjoy as our "self-evident" right? There lies the problem. "

" Dear Ms. Aubrey, if you read the letter, and could not detect incitement to misunderstanding and hatred then you, my dear, live in a vacuum.

The topic and the tone of the letter written in the context of current events, and our present place in history, is without doubt controversial and inflammatory. More importantly, it incites hatred and fear of a segment of our population currently struggling for equal rights as citizens.

For Mr. Hamman to have cloaked the hatred and fear-mongering of his letter as Biblical is both blasphemous and morally bankrupt. "

" While Mr. Hamann offers fear and judgment and assumes that he will be one of the "chosen." Mr. Bess offers hope for each of us. and respect for one another. I'll try and follow Mr. Bess's interpretation. It seems to come close to what Christ offered to us by example. I just hope I can live up to it. "

" Mr. Hamman deeply offended and angered many people not because he was capable of knowing or speaking the truth, but because he was petty and hateful both in his words and his timing.

HIs article used inflammatory language, and his logic was entirely absent. His writing was poor. His Biblical knowledge and understanding was pathetic.

Further, it is a vile insult to Billy Graham. a man who has inspired millions to love and worship Jesus, to suggest he and the ignoble Mr. Hamman, who has spawned only hatred and misunderstanding, are on the same level. "

" What right-wingers think free speech means:

They get to say whatever they want, and anyone who disagrees with them should shut up.

Sharon, your profoundly anti-American worldview is a disgrace. "

" What kind of idiot thinks that his "Free Speech" rights are being violated if a newspaper publishes an opinion he doesn't like, or doesn't publish one he does?

Guess what? Freedom of the press applies to those who own one.

If it hurts your heart to see a letter to the editor that isn't bigoted against one community or another--start your own hate sheet. That's what freedom of the press means. "

" Howard Bess approaches Scripture from the stand point of how we can best bring everyone together. Ethan Hamman appraches Scripture from the stand point of how we can separate those that don't fall exactly in line. Hamman's article served no purpose in bringing his flock together or spreading the Word of God. Bess's articles may be a bit flowery at times, but they are all based on the premise that we can be better and that sometimes being better may not match traditional beliefs and practices. "

" Until recently, when there have been no new faith columns at all (at least in the on-line editon), the anti-homo bunch has had columns at a rate of two antis to one pro. Where is the suppression? You are just flat out wrong. Your letter was published, was it not? Your right to free speech has hardly been suppressed. In any case, the Frontiersman is a private operation and as such, it may publish whatever it pleases, just as you are free to publish whatever viewpoint you wish in your newspaper. Do you criticize Fox news for its conservative stance? "

In the past 2 years with Palin and now this new policy only goes to prove the Frontiersman is on a downward spiral to extinction. Biased, one sided and not nearl the paper it used to be. Sad "

" Your entire letter is based oa the false premise that the First Amendment requires a newspaper to allow all speech it does not. The First Amendment says the Government will make no law prohibiting free speech not a company that puts out a newspaper. If the city or the State or the FED's say he can not be published then there is a problem until then no way is it a free speech issue. "

" Actually, the Frontiersman is a breath of fresh air, in that they seem to allow biblical Christians to voice their opinions too. Howard Bess's doctrines seem to be as if he's just cherry picked what he likes and tossed the rest of Scripture but where are the good works, biblical type ones, the other Pastors are doing? Hospitality was/is basic all through Bible times. It's still common in the Middle East. And we get to point out these things in Mat-Su. Sodom was as much guilty of inhospitality as it was loaded with sodomites. "
