PALMER — The Matanuska Electric Association has decided on an interim general manager.

In a meeting Wednesday afternoon, the co-op’s board of directors selected Joe Griffith to take the reins as soon as they can get a contract hammered out.

The seat has been vacant for just over a week. On June 16, the board voted to put general manager Wayne Carmony on leave pending a final termination. His ouster is the latest in a string of changes at the co-op that began when the board’s makeup shifted from one in favor of Carmony’s management style to one opposed.

Carmony’s detractors say he doesn’t work well with other utilities or MEA’s union. His supporters point to the bottom line, claiming Carmony’s adversarial style kept electricity rates low.

Griffith is a former CEO of Chugach Electric Association whose tenure ended in 2005. He is also a founding member of the Chugach Reliability Group. The group’s Web site tracks changes coming down from Chugach’s board of directors.

" I can think of 2 employees not happy to see Wayne get fired, Steve Willis and UCon. These two Wayne BB's were hired into technical positions with absolutely no clue. Steve got preference over two better qualified candidates. UCon was hired as a substation tech. Talk about having to hold my nose "

" Only 25% of the staff at MEA are Union. So get over the union stuff already. It is the Administration that has grown to an astounding rate. I am so glad the management at MEA is changing because that was one sick place for sure. I have faith in the board and their decisions. I know that MEA is on it's way to better days. Don't listen to the gloom and doom. It is not true. A happy staff is a productive staff. Congratulations MEA and the Board of Directors. "

" I just wanted to say really quickly that because of the 100 word cut off my comments are out of order. I apologize if they are confusing. Just to clarify I'm not trying to talk smack to you Dennis. I just want you to realize my frustration and I hope you understand that I believe that Wayne is not the person he appears to be. I truly want the best for the rate payers. Wayne is not the right fit for MEA. I'll stop there an leave it at that. Thank you "

" It got to the point that everyone knew that Wayne was no longer running a cooperative, but his own kingdom. Did you know it took 14 years to make Wayne let the engineers turn there voice mail on. To this day the are not allowed to use email or have cell phones. Why? Because king Carmony said so. Employees in all departments are laughed at simple because Wayne never allowed MEA employees to be treated like professionals. He always wanted to keep everyone under his thumb. MEA needs a clean start. "

" I'd like to say something to Dennis Oakland. I don't use my real name because I am an employee at MEA. Do you know that just about all the employees at MEA are rejoicing at Carmony's departure. It has been a miserable 15 years. I do not stand for the Union or any special interest. I just know that Wayne only cared about himself. I've watched countless acts of terrible management. Things that were done out of spite simply to make Wayne feel big. .... Continued below.... "

" Its very frustrating to hear people say that because of the Union our rates will go up and MEA will be ran into the ground. Most Employees at MEA are not even Union. The Union salary is only a small portion of the over all budget. If the Union is going to wreck MEA, then the math does not add up. If you want to bash the board you better come up with something new... something that actually means something. Crying "union" is only a scare tactic. Stop whining.... "

" Just to clear it up, I am Kevin Brown, the person who ran the campaigns for Lois Lester, Kit Jones, Janet Kincaid, and Peter Burchell. I did NOT write the comment below, saying that the Board let me down in this selection. I think Mr. Griffith is an outstanding choice as an interim GM while a full national search is conducted. I am offended that someone used my name to post on this blog, but I guess I'm not surprised by that kind of childish behavior. Anyone who wants to debate like a grown-up can step right up. "

Nothing new for Palmer, same ole crew running our town, like Palin and her cronies running this state. Alaska = corruption.

There are good people in Alaska, we need to fight for new blood and stop this ring of fire AKA circle of friends running our towns and state! I'm too old but surely there has to be educated new blood we can trust! "

" Yes, I am a spineless weasel. I am terrified of anyone finding out my true identity as I would be forced to retract all of my lies about, well, just about everything! I do support thr MEA board, even though they are the most corrupt I have ever seen, but like me, they voted for Obama, so I worship them regardless. I am a coward none the less. I am a paid off hack who is just as corrupt as the board, so that's why I can't use my real name, so I slander others by using their name. "

Griffith is a capable, competent, and experienced executive. He is an excellent person to keep the ship on course until a permanent replacement can be found.

This Lois Lester-led board deserves our gratitude. "

" Isn't this the Chugach Electric Manager who refinanced the debt with no long term contracts to pay the debt off? Hang on to your pocketbooks folks, MEA is headed for bankruptcy and higher rates, all put forth by someone with no ethics or conscience, and I'll bet his salary will be twice that of Carmonys, all while forcing the employees of MEA to hold their noses every day. "

Insider wrote on Jun 24, 2009 9:42 PM:

" This has clearly been the board's agenda. If they really had cause to fire Carmony, why put him on paid administrative leave? The MEA grapevine knew they hired this looser before the meeting was over. I wonder if "Teflon Don" Zoerb liked Griffith's boots when he worked at Chugach? It's time for members to petition for a new board. These lunatics need to be put in a padded cell, Can anyone spell CONSPIRACY? Where is the TRANSPARENCY THEY PROMISED? "

" Gee, no agenda here! Hire an IBEW hack to complete the picture. This guy was fired by the Chugach Board for giving the Union EVERYTHING they wanted and more. Corrupt, Corrupt, Corrupt!!!

    Fire this corrupt board!!
It's YOUR CO-OP and you just lost it.
You had better get ready for the next election and take it back, or be prepared to have your electric rates skyrocket through the roof to fund union contracts! "
