Keep pets at home

To the editor:

The article about Kelly Bennett and her snared cat: Let me see if I have this right, she lost a cat last summer, and now she almost lost another one. Well, duh.

If you keep your cat — or dog — in your house, or at least on your property, you won’t have this problem.

If Bennett wants someone to blame for her cat’s injury, all she has to do is look in the mirror. It is her fault, no one else’s. If the cat had been run over, or chewed up by a dog, would she be trying to blame the car or the dog?

Also, I noticed that the article failed to mention borough ordinance 24.05.070 which Bennett is in violation of. Typical biased reporting by the Frontiersman.

" Not a surprising story. Far too many irresponsible pet owners out there who let their pets run wild and free. So lovely are some of the pet owners around Victoria Estates that they leave their barking dogs out at all hours of the night, disrupting everyone else. Rude, irresponsible people shouldn't be upset if something happens to their pet because they cannot control it. "

" After getting sick and tired of stray cats taking a crap in our garden , I trapped one in a live trap, attached a note to it's collar that admonished the owner to please keep the cat at home, and then sent the cat on it's way. . The only mistake I made was signing my name to the note. The owner of the cat went crazy and came to my home and threatened to beat me up. And here I thought I was doing the pet owner a favor since I could have just shot the cat. "

" Don't forget all the sandboxes that cats ruin. And how about all the wild birds that cats kill. If a dog killed as many animals as a cat does it would be labeled vicious and would be put down. SAVE A BIRD - KEEP CATS HOME. Not to mention sand boxes and flower gardens. "

" No, a cat just goes to the bathroom in your lawn and garden, eats your chickens and gets into your trash. That's all. No big deal. Heaven forbid we hold pet owners accountable! "

" A pet cat loose doesn't present the same hazards as a pet dog on the loose. When hiking or biking, I always carry pepper spray at the ready. If a dog comes racing up to me barking in a menacing way it gets a snout full of pepper spray. But a cat?...No harm. "

" I wasn't the one 'spouting' the law...that came from the Wildlife Trooper quoted in the article...perhaps you should check your facts prior to spouting your laws!! I think most people are responsible pet owners and I know pets get loose now and then, mine have! that doesn't give anyone the right to show such cruelty to animals or people that may come across the unknowing public. I am sure your neighbors have no idea what you are up to in your area...savages I tell ya!! Hopefully you don't live near me! "

Dear "Amazed", the trapping season is NOT closed. There is no closed season on hares (rabbits) in your Game Management Unit nor does it say they must be shot and not trapped to be taken legally. Before you spout the law - know the law. The "leash law" IS in effect in your GMU and easily understood. "

" If you kept your critters at home, there would be no need to set traps. Do you think they're set to catch air. Get a clue, be responsible or someone will have to do that for you. I have animals who occasionally escape but haven't encountered traps because it is very rare. My neighbors cat has been know to taste a BB in the rear when he eats birds from our feeders and poos in my rock beds. It's learning. "

" Children and wildlife cannot be kept safely at home at all times, and they can also walk into the snares and traps when they are set out indiscriminately and irresponsibly. It is a good thing this woman alerted the community to a dangerous problem of irresponsibly set traps. "

" I will put up with some issues in order to be neighborly. A couple things I should not have to put up with: Cats killing the birds that I have on my property. That includes my chickens, the spruce hens and all the other wild birds that we have. My neighbor called one morning and told me that a cat was hiding under my porch and killing all birds that came to the feeder. That cat killed over 30 birds that day. Not to mention what they leave in my children's sand box!! Keep cats home. "

" I think everyone has missed the point. It is not about a cat or dog running free, its about people respecting the neighbors that surround them and the children that play in the woods, the adults that walk their leashed animals being hurt by those that have no consideration for the safety of animals or people. Moose also get caught in these snares and are seriously injured and die, trapping season is CLOSED!! How about that law Mr. Butts?? I would reccomend moving quite a bit further out of civilization for you to be content. "

" Wow --To Mr Butts how appropriate =Can't you read ?? he said He said keep your dog on your own property or restrained. I thank you Mr Butts for the correct mention of the law for dogs and CATS. I keep hearing people say their dog or cat NEEDS to run loose to be happy- it is natural. Yes then they can enjoy getting hit by a car, getting in fights with dogs or cats, getting lost. eating bad stuff, some one taking your animal, not to mention getting pregnant. Barbara Shew "

" I agree with letter writer. I am very fond of my cat, which is why she is an indoors only cat. The statistics tell the story-for that reason she most likely will be with our family much longer than any cat owned by Ms. Bennett. "

" Your sensitivity overwhelms me sir! Your compassion for domestic animals and owners is beyond reasonable sense, guess the phrase about being chewed up by a dog demonstrates your partiality to dogs, you do not mention that the dog should also be restrained, that they too should not be allowed to chew or chase any other animal, moose or person either. Not worth your letter Butts. "
