Wasilla resident, Margaret Joyce Remsen, 78, died June 28 of natural causes at her home in Wasilla. She was born Oct. 12, 1931 in Long Beach, Calif., to Jacob and Margaret Hone.

Margaret came to Alaska in the spring of 1996.

She was a high school and nursing school graduate.

Margaret worked at Oregon State Mental Hospital in Pendleton, volunteered at Cayuse-Umatilla Reservation in Oregon and worked with the Mission Seniors Gleaning program. She also worked with the California U.S.O. in the 1950s.

Margaret loved to read, meditate on Bahá’í teachings, knitting, crocheting, watercolor painting and helping all in need.

Her family wrote: “We all remember Maggie in our own way, but one common thread was service. Most recently as treasurer for the Local Spiritual Assembly (LSA) of Wasilla Bahá’ís. She opened her heart and home to all in need. Maggie spent over 25 years on the Cayuse-Umatilla Reservation ‘behind-the-scenes’ making the impossible possible for the whole Bill Clan and countless others. She assisted the Wasilla Food Bank for several years and through the Mission Seniors Gleaning program and her ability to preserve food, she aided in feeding many families. This woman nurtured the world around her in countless ways everyday of her wise, compassionate journey. So we say Bon Voyage ‘Maggie Mae,’ thank you for your generous soul and your many gifts everyday. Your smiling wisdom and laughing spirit will be greatly missed. Qe’ci’yew’yew (thank you in Nez Perce).”

She was preceded in death by her father, Jacob Hone; mother, Margaret M. Hone; partner, Ivan “Slim” Bill and son, Thomas Remsen.

Margaret is survived by her daughters, Diane L. Pratt and Rebecca L. Lindsey of Wasilla; granddaughters, Shawna L. Stewart and Angela M.D. Piaskowski of Wasilla; grandsons, Timothy R. Lindsey, Joseph R. Pratt and Cyle J. Lindsey of Wasilla; great-grandson, Logan T. Lindsey of Wasilla and great-granddaughter, Becca L. Kelly.

Arrangements are with Alaskan Heritage Memorial Chapel in Wasilla.
