What about the others who quit mid-term?

To the editor:

Dear citizens of Wasilla and the great state of Alaska.

Thank you for allowing us to meet your friend Sarah Palin. I wanted to write to respond to the extensive ruminating the media and bloggers are doing about Gov. Palin.

First, as I listened to her resignation speech and considered the timing, I felt I understood exactly what she was saying. It was not as some have stated “incomprehensible,” “flustered,” “lacking in focus,” or worse “imbecilic” or “moronic.” I have seen much worse also on Twitter, which makes me wonder when we did away with decency standards in America completely.

Second, I wonder where the outcry of “quitter” was for Janet Napolitano, ex-governor of Arizona; Kathleen Sibellius, ex-governor of Kansas; Hillary Clinton, ex-Senator of New York or Rahm Emmanuel, ex-congressman of Illinois. All of these abandoned their constituents mid-term to enjoy the bigger paycheck and prestige they would enjoy working for President Obama. For that matter, ex-senator Joe Biden, Sen. John McCain and ex-senator Barack Obama both abandoned their constituents mid-term to campaign for office while still taking a paycheck from us.

Third, The media are simply not connected to the American people. Those of us that understand the peril this country is currently in and how far we have strayed from the principles that made us great, honor and respect Sarah’s decision to step down. I understand that she did so in order to allow the Alaska government to function at full efficiency and capacity for the benefit of all it’s people while moving all of the litigation and ankle biters out of the Capitol.

Fourth, we understand that, yes, politicians have to be prepared to take the blows, but Sarah’s values and ideals are so far removed from what the media elite and far left bloggers can even comprehend (I compare darkness to light), that they cannot seem to hear her past their fear of what she stands for. Hence they must attack her, her children, her education, her fashion, etc. in the most heinous ways they can imagine and in ways that have never been done before, even to other female candidates. Sarah is strong enough to take it, but she must and will protect her family.

Fifth, we are anxious to see her here in the Lower 48. I immediately understood that her first aim is to help conservative governors and others get elected or retain their seats in 2010. That must be accomplished before worrying about 2012. We have a great candidate here in Florida who needs her support in his run for Senate against the state and D.C., establishment-backed moderate Gov. Charlie Crist. We wish he would step down while he’s running since he spent 1/2 of his term getting married. Sarah, if you happen to read this, please check out http://www.marcorubio.com, especially the video of his farewell as Speaker of the House. You speak the same language.

Would we love to see Sarah in office? Absolutely. I could see the Senate in 2012 or the White House. But I will support Sarah in her well-considered decision no matter what she decides is her next step. The media just cannot abide not being “in the know.” And we the people love that.

" Yielding power to lt. gov. for continuation of her good work in Alaska is not quiting on her commitment to Alaska. Whatever she does she will still be fighting for Alaska, her family, and the conservative values our country needs. Her political style may not be traditional, but look where traditional has gotten us. Susan should change "quit" to "yield power". The rest of her article is right on. We need leaders like Sarah Palin and committed families like hers. God bless her and our country. "

And the number of days the JUNIOR senator spent doing his job range anywhere between 118 to 183 depending on what the source counts as a 'day'. In any case, it's well short of '2 years'. But you're right about one thing...somebody obviously does need to educate themself. "

While you're at it...look at the number of times he didn't bother to vote, and the number of times he merely voted 'present' instead of 'aye' or 'nay'. Oh yeah, a real leader he is... "

You need to re-do your math
Obama's term as the United States Senator
from Illinois began January 4, 2005.
He announced his decision to run for president Feb. 10, 2007. So he was a U.S. Senator for over TWO YEARS before running - NOT 118 days.
And he was a state senators for almost EIGHT years before he took the U.S. Senate seat.
Please stop with your falsehoods. "

" I think its interesting that for a bunch of people who say Sarah is "done stick a fork in her", seem to be obsessed by her. It could be that they couldn't destroy her any other way. It could be they're afraid of her potential for the future and her influence now. This is just one more example of the liberals tactics. If you can't win the debate, make fun of them, shout them down, or hold them up to a higher standard. It bugs both the left and the right that she won't cave when they speak. "

" I'm from Virginia and indeed Governor Palin can stay in AK. When she last campaigned here she did John McCain no favor when she told a rally in South West VA that she was glad to be in the "real Virginia". That remark was like a poke in the eye to the Northern part of the State where most VA voters live. Second, no Virginia would ever make such a dumb remark. Third, we Virginians appreciate ea other no matter where we live in the State. The writer needs to wake up and see reality! "

" Elizabethrh in AK... IS CORRECT. Only THREE governors have quit (Jim McGreevy, Eliot Spitzer and now Sarah Palin). All other governors that resigned their seat did so when they were being sworn into a higher position. Palin just plain up and quit - her political future is over. Stick a fork in her, she's done. "

" @then why - when other governors (the CEO of their state, if you will) have been tapped for senior national office, they temporarily cede authority to their LT. Senators who choose to run for higher office have no-one to cede authority to (and since each state has two senators, the state is still represented). Palin did not cede authority to Parnell and as a result, our state had no CEO.

It's not a liberal or conservative issue, it's about sticking to committments. Palin has shown time and time again she can't stick to it. "

" Dear Ms. Gordon, the people you mentioned were all offered another job within their party to work at a national level. They did not abandon their state as Ms. Palin has done. She was not offered a career advancement - she resigned because the going got rough. In my book that's a quitter. She'll be the next FOX News personality where she'll earn millions and that's her choice but she quit on the Alaskans who voted her in over personal not national concerns.. "

    " Jiminalaska,
Interesting twist; Sticking noses in other's people's business is what republicans do, huh? So then, how exactly does that fit into the liberal obsession for creating law after law after law and making government as big as possible. Regulating what he eat, think, etc. But somehow, some way, you turn it around to where it's Republicans that like to take control of what we do? Huh. Interesting. "

Really getting tired of outsiders sticking their noses in our business especially when they can't get the facts right, but that's what Republicans do and I'm not a Democrat. I don't need a club to belong to in order to make a decision. "

Funny...I never saw Hillary or Obama receiving any bad press over campaigning and 'abandoning' their positions? Oh..wait...it's like Power Wagon said...she's a conservative. Gotta remember those double standards applied by liberals and the press! "

Regarding "her first aim is to help conservative governors and others get elected or retain their seats in 2010." My understanding is the first two GOP candidates due at bat in VA & NJ are distancing themselves from her. "

" Huge difference between your examples and Palin - each of the individuals listed resigned to take higher positions of service within our government. Since 1900, there have been 1200 elected governors in the US...only THREE have quit (Jim McGreevy, Eliot Spitzer and now Sarah Palin). Resigning for a promotion is hardly the same thing as quitting outright. "
