Scouts wet, but OK

BUTTE — The elements conspired against a canoe trip Thursday as a high wind, strong tide and swift current on the Knik River proved too much for a group of Boy Scouts.

The Butte Fire Department responded to a call around 3:30 p.m. of paddlers being blown downstream of the Old Glenn Knik River Bridge by 20-mile-an-hour winds and the outgoing tide.

“We were on scene in about 10 minutes,” Butte Fire Chief John Akers said. “When we got here, they were already out of the water. Some were on the gravel bar and some were on the island.”

Mat-Su Borough Dive and Rescue Team arrived shortly after with a jet boat and an inflatable boat with an outboard motor. The team brought the Boy Scouts back to the public access point and then retrieved their canoes.

An on-scene assessment turned up no injuries, except for some bruised egos.

The group of Scouts hailed from Texas and Alaska, and was taking part in the Silver Sourdough Program, according to one Scout who was cut off by his peers before giving his name.

They spent the last few days hiking around Butte and planned to set out in eight canoes today.

The Scout leaders would offer no further comment.

" Two inaccuracies blamed on the weather - current (not swift but moderate) and tides (never reach that far up, 75' above sea level). Now the wind whistling through there is another story that would make handling a canoe a difficult job, especially for the inexperienced. Anytime the wind is blowing down there canoes should stay on the beach, otherwise that stretch of river is a cakewalk. Thank goodness no one got hurt. "

" Glad to see all are safe. Too bad the Frontiersman reporter can't get all of his information correct.
John Akers is the Butte Ambulance Chief, not the Fire Chief. He is a Captain on the fire dept. "

" I understand! where people come from when they complain about having to pay for these rescues. See, every time the EMS (Borough) has to make a run for people who get in over their heads, it costs the taxpayers money. Taxpayers pay enough. Be responsible. I expect better planning- after all, the water was record high for the summer, strong Knik winds, and inexperience. Yeah, I agree- make them reinburse the costs. And Debra, pay attention, lady- the facts have been out fir 24 hours. Geesh. "

Seriously, you're worried about your tax dollars?

At least those young men were out doing something other than running the streets. They were prepared and when things did not work out as planned they took the appropriate action and called for help, before things turned bad.

And let's not forget to say thanks to the Vol. Fire Dept. you guys once again proved your worth. "

" I find the comments made to this story presumptious considering there are no facts about what actually happened that put these scouts in this predicament. Sometimes the best plans go bad. At least they had communication, were dressed for the elements and were able to swallow their pride and say, we're in trouble' and ask for help. And the great news is everyone survived! "

" follow you own scout rules.

    plan and prepare.

    you got lucky.

i assume you have liability coverages, right?

another tax burden to the borough. charge them. "

" real smart scout leaders you got there. the group from Alaska should have known better but guess not. The Knik is not one to be messed with. Glad to know my tax dollars paid for their safety lesson. better than a body recovery. Good story to tell their Texas friends back home. i am still laughing about it myself. "
