Bill Gamble, chief of the West Lakes Fire Department, said he spoke to Houston Mayor Roger Purcell at a meeting Thursday regarding consolidation of ambulance services in their neck of the borough.
He said the conversation turned contentious and ended with Purcell saying, “Tomorrow the city of Houston and the city of Wasilla are going to announce that we’re going to split from the borough.”

“Is the borough too big? Should it be bifurcated? Is it serving the whole area properly? I don’t know. Those are issues that have to be looked at,” he said. But secession? “Wasilla certainly hasn’t weighed in officially to do any such a thing.”
Reached for comment Friday morning, Purcell would not speak on the record.
“There’s a press release coming out this afternoon and that’s all I can say,” he said.
Later in the day, he said a little more. Houston’s city council voted on a motion at Thursday’s meeting to support secession plans, he said.
“It was a motion to consent to move forward [and examine the] possibility of the formation of a new borough in this area,” Purcell said.
But he wouldn’t explain further, saying that it would probably be about a week or longer before the plan was in any form to give more details like proposed boundaries and legal issues and reasons for secession.
Rupright said supporting or not supporting a secession plan isn’t a matter the Wasilla council has yet set on any upcoming meeting agenda.
The question, he said, raises a lot of smaller, but likely more complicated, questions. How do you split up the services? How do you split up the liabilities? Who gets what debt?
“The borough wants to do a sales tax and the borough wants to chip away at our planning powers,” Rupright said.
But is secession the right move?
“People have been bantering this concept about for years,” Rupright said, adding that before any sort of action is taken, there needs to be a lot more discussion.

you never own your land that way- in fact, large tracts inherited by family then become a tax BURDEN.
Figure it out- lower local borough government, a sales tax with NO exemptions, no property tax, and that makes it fair. "

Ever notice that every time an idea comes along that angers Mat-Sueans, they threaten to leave or they tell the other guy to leave. Why is that? Do we have a fear of separation that we are spreading around like the flu? "

Seriously if they ad a borough sales tax then I would seriously consider moving to areas in the lower 48..............there are still small towns with good people. "

If Houston/Wasilla secede then we need to take Big Lake with us! Let the remote areas figure out things for themselves.
Done with the tree huggers and greedy politicians! NO MORE TAXES and this includes PROPERTY TAXES!!!!!

it's Assembly and Borough Maanager are to blame...IT IS TIME TO SPLIT. Time to build a peoples borough for those who have been here forever and those that moved here to live the dream of small government. The others, that want code compliance and Zoning, more Anchorage, they can stay in there little "corrupt to the core area"
We want out, put it to a vote...NOW "

Just for the record, the Palmer area, including Sutton, Butte, Lazy and Fishhook currently have timber, mining, and gravel operations. But, it's okay to make uniformed accusations, it's how you'll run your new borough. Unplanned development does not equal growth, or at least smart growth. If you want out, then by god do it.
Good luck with services, law enforcement and city growth! "
