Shouting overcomes reason in government

To the editor,

Several times during recent months, I was actually hopeful that America could — and would — recover from the mistakes of the Bush Administration and the stranglehold on our U.S. legislators by the insurance companies, drug manufacturers and the Wall Street bankers. Sadly, though, the American people seem to be allowing the shouting matches of those who seek to preserve the status quo to drown out the voice of reason.

We are fortunate to have a reasonable president who appointed reasonable people to manage the functions of government. Hopefully, when the shouting is over, reasonable people will seek their own council.

Art Carney

At which point he happily handed it over and killed the issue. I guess such an easy move was too much to ask for the other camp, though. Best we got was a doctored image on a stupid web-site. "

Unless you're a liberal at the Republican convention, an idiot protester at a college while somebody you don't like is giving a speech or a recruiter is visiting etc etc. THEN...it's 'different'! THEN...it's 'OK'!

    Hypocrisy...it's a liberal thing... "

"Patients First" a front organization for insurance companies. It has organized and bussed Americans all over the nation for the purpose of stopping any possibility that the truth can be discussed.

Deliberately drowning out opposing views is unAmerican, undemocratic, unethical, and a clear obstruction of justice and free speech. "

    " Dean,
I agree with and understand what you're saying. But the further we step back from the big picture, things pop up that we can 'blame this on'. FDR, Nixon taking us off the gold standard, Carter etc.

But specifically, the recent recession came for several reasons, with several people objectively identifed by economists as directly involved (yes Bush. But also Bill Clinton, Greenspan, Wall St., American consumer and especially CONGRESS who gave the banks those relaxed lending regulations!)

Since it was the liberals in Congress leading that charge, it's ridiculous to see them "blame Bush". "

Dean wrote on Aug 12, 2009 5:46 PM:

" "The crash started 8 years ago?!?" "2 years ago?!?" Good grief, people! Read some history. The current crash is 1933, when FDR instituted a massive growth in the size of the federal government (New Deal). It didn't work, but that fact was obscured by the outbreak of WWII. Since the USA was practically the only undestroyed country after WWII led to our financial boom in the latter part of the 20th Century. FDR's programs did begin the insidious growth of government that is the root of our current mess. "

" Art, you have not been paying attention to what the protestors are saying out there!! Wake up!

We DON"T want to "preserve the status quo!" We want to slash federal government size to the bone along with our taxes . A 50% reduction in size would be a good STARTING point. We want to destroy the stranglehold of federal agencies on our private lives. We want a return to a country of 50 sovereign states and not 50 dependencies. We want freedom and liberty. "Preserving the status quo???" Pay better attention, Art! "

If we in Alaska would work harder and stop whining, we might not have this deficit. I see too many potheads sitting around draining our local economy. The local taxes -sales and school taxes- are going up. Where is this oil revenue Palin promised us? "

The liberals took Congress and passed new regs that drastically eased lending and banking regulations! Wanna go one step farther? Who signed off on that? For starters, how about SENATOR OBAMA and SENATOR PELOSI!

Big reason why those of us with a brain were choking watching them try to be so dang sanctimonius during the campaign and point thier fingers at Bush (who is not blameless either) "

It took Obama 160 days to turn that into 3.75 trillion dollars.
Who was worse really? it's simple math.

you just don't hand out tax payer money to bail out companies who made bad business choices!
Let the cards fall where they may, and allow others to learn from, and improve on, and real growth will occur. "

If McCain/Palin were in power (shuddering at the thought) do you really think the deficit would be any lower? Bush left a huge mess to clean up - supported by his Republican SHEEP. Thank you, all of you for condoning the economic mess we're in now. "

You don't have to like what's being said, but how can you refute the facts presented if you won't listen? These disruptors don't care for democracy, they just don't like the fact that the Republicans lost big time in the last election. That's not a valid argument against anything, and it's certainly not the way to get people to vote them back in. I won't vote for bullies. "

She speaks of "some being h - bent on tearing down our nation", "perpetuating pessimism". Very sarcastically, with plenty of body motion and twisted cutsie-pie faces she says "so......in honor of the American soldier, how 'bout you quit making things up?!?!" Perhaps Sarah should take her own advice given her insane "death squad" comments this past weekend. Perhaps we should all strive to become "part of the solution." Our auto industry, banks and insurance companies are essentially federalized. Obama now seeks to federalize the medical and energy sectors. All this is in 200days!!!! Obama though works through intimidation and thinly vieled threats toward those who question his authority. He calls our Constitution "a living document" subject to any interpretation he finds convenient. Wow. Is this the Frontiersman site or the on-line MAD magazine site? The current health care system goes back far, far beyond the past SEVERAL presidents. The 'status quo' should be replaced by a socialist joke of a proposal that's worse than the current one a hundred times over? Obama is 'reasonable' by replacing one system with another that only makes it worse, tripling the debt, etc etc?
