Palmer resident, Della Harriet Mitchell, 95, died July 27 at Northern Comfort assisted living facility in Palmer.

The family will hold a memorial service at a future date in Estes Park, Colo., where her ashes will be placed next to those of her husband.

Della was born July 8, 1914, in Emporia, Kansas, to Irl R. and Gracie M. (Keating) Clements. She graduated from College of Emporia in 1936 and taught home economics intermittently until retirement in 1968.

After raising their two sons, Wayne and Richard, in Kansas, Della and her husband realized their dream of retirement in Estes Park in 1977. She became an accomplished landscape painter along with enjoying sewing and knitting.  They remained there until son Wayne and his family left Colorado and moved to the Matanuska Valley in Alaska in 1992. Their other son Rich and his family was living in Minnesota, and Della and her husband wanted to be near at least one son, as family was the most important thing in their lives. She and her husband moved between the two sons in various locations starting in 1993.  They relocated to Minneapolis and then followed Rich to Memphis, Tenn.  They then joined their son Wayne in Palmer from 1994 to 1996. They moved back to Tennessee until after her husband’s death. She relocated back to Estes Park, where her son Rich planned to retire, and then finally relocated back to Palmer in 2007 to be near her son Wayne until her death.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, C. Freeman Mitchell.  She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Jan Mitchell of the Matanuska Glacier Community, her son and daughter-in-law Richard and Kay Mitchell of Estes Park. Grandchildren Joey and Chandra Mitchell of Spring Lake, N.C., Bodwin and Jodie Clark of Colorado Springs, Colo., Kor and Kelly Mitchell of London, England, and four great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Northern Comfort assisted living facility for their superb care of Della.

Arrangements were made by Kehl’s Palmer Mortuary.
