Points pile up for Pats

NORTH POLE — The most important number for Lee Jones wasn’t 357 — the amount of yards he passed for  — or five — how many touchdowns he threw.

It was the No. 2 on his brother Sterling Thomas’ jersey.

The North Pole Patriots quarterback donned the jersey in tribute to Thomas, who couldn’t play due to sickness, as the Patriots defeated the Wasilla Warriors 61-6 on Friday night in North Pole.

North Pole’s Jared Isaacson, right, extends his body for a touchdown despite being taken down at the end of a long run by Wasilla’s Pat Chafin during the second quarter Friday evening at Patriot Pride Field. The Patriots won 61-6. JOHN WAGNER/ Fairbanks Daily News-Miner

“I was ready to play today,” said Jones, who also had 40 yards rushing and returned an interception 62 yards for a touchdown. “I was kind of upset my brother didn’t play, so I wore his number.”

Jones, who regularly wears jersey No. 7, threw for 325 yards before halftime, heaving three touchdown passes to Phillip Hingst (25, 56 and 54 yards), and one each to Jared Isaacson (58 yards) and Justin Chace (9 yards).

The Patriots improved to 2-1 overall and in the Railbelt Conference.

Hingst, who finished the night with five receptions for 159 yards, scored North Pole’s first 21 points, as he caught the Patriots’ first three touchdowns and kicked a 28-yard field goal.

Isaacson had four catches for 125 yards, and Josh Hollett reeled in five passes for 64 yards.

The Patriots’ defense quashed any chance of a comeback as it held the Warriors to 94 yards in total offense.

“It was just playing football, just holding our assignments and not letting them blow us back,” North Pole defensive lineman Chris Wentland said.

Though the offense didn’t give Wentland and Co. much of a breather with quick-strike touchdowns — three were scored with fewer than four plays — North Pole’s defense wasn’t complaining.

“We’re always excited to get back out there,” Wentland said. “We just love flying around and making plays.”

Wasilla coach Glenn Nelson said the Warriors’ chances at a comeback diminished as three running backs and starting quarterback Cody Pfeifer were sidelined with minor injuries during the game. The Warriors played three quarterbacks and had nine ball carriers.

Wasilla put its only points on the board after the Patriots’ second touchdown. Isaiah Edwards returned the ensuing kickoff 66 yards to cut North Pole’s lead to 12-6 with 2:14 remaining in the first quarter.

With a 35-6 halftime lead, the Patriots turned to senior running back Eric Antesberger, who had 63 of his 76 yards in the second half.

Antesberger, Alex Innes and Frankie Anderson supplied North Pole with rushing touchdowns after halftime.

“Once we get that D-line down, that’s when we turn it over to the hogs,” Patriots head coach Richard Henert said, referring to North Pole’s running backs and offensive line.

Lets hope the kids win on Saturday wrote on Aug 28, 2009 8:41 AM:

" Nothing worse than loosing the 1st three games after being named head coach. I was a head coach years ago. Parents were horrible to deal with. The team played well and won, but then parents still complained about playing time and positions.
Most of the Wasilla high school players are still having fun. They want to win, but they still are smiling and trying to pull themselves up from the losses. Folks it is a game ment to be played in the dirt for fun. "

" You know its clear that everyone hate Nelson and all the other coaches you named off.but the point here is that the kids left at 6am didnt have anything to eat till they stopped for lunch and then didn't eat again till after they're game. now that may be how you treat your kids. But knowing teenagers they need more food than that. "

" OK 1st the team only had one meal for np at ClearAFS. They did not eat for 7 hours prior to the game. Certain levels in the body need to be up for a game, might explain the number of injuries during the game. 2nd comment on the jammies. would you like your daughter to have to go the bathroom in the woods if she was on a bus full of football players. the bus stopped at one gas station and the other was beside the road. so ask yourself and other parents if this is acceptable behavior. "

" Interested Observer hit the nail on the head. I was at a player at Chugiak during the glory years 95,96 & 97 and had coach Humm (former WHS/OC) as my qb coach. From 92 to 97 he was the offensive eye in the sky for Bruce Sheerer. In a smart move Coach Shetter got him to come out of retirement and in his first year WHS make the playoffs and win the potatoe bowl for the first time in 6 years. Wait and see. Coach Humm will surface somewhere. I'm suprised he hasn't yet. "

Yeah but life lessons.. wrote on Aug 27, 2009 7:46 AM:

" are best learned by someone else, these parents think their kids are headed to the NFL and the only thing standing in the way is Coach Nelson (gag). Grow up - they have mostly sophmores and juniors - it's gonna be a long year. There are plenty of parents who couldn't stand Shetter and there are plenty of parents who couldn't stand Gardner. It's tough to watch, but quit piling on with the kids not being able to eat their orange wedges and drink their monster drinks on the bus, they may need their jammies for the road trips! "

" It is time-to move on. Yes, there is a lot of issues. Yes, the past parents let the stars in their eyes cloud their thought process. Yes, the old coach and the new one have issues with each other.
For the young kids coming up it is time to move on and let the problems from the past be just that. No doubt that no coach does it for the $5000. Look at how much Nelson has been slammed. No way I would do the job for $5000 a season. "

" "mr BUFF" i would say you are right it is for the kids. so they should be able to talk to the paper without being punished. or not told they can't bring food on the bus. this isn't about the kids its about only one person the coach. punishing kids because they lost to Juneau. Mr Buff i would have to say that there won't be a program if he is stays as the coach "

Local sports buff wrote on Aug 26, 2009 2:16 PM:

" What a blame game. First what happened to-Not whether you win or lose but how you play. Second these kids will make it as good or bad as they want. Sure losing sucks but come on. Give the coach a few years to build. Give the kids a few years to build and support them win or loose. Remember important life lessons can be learned even in a rough year. Remember it is about the kids. Not the kids parents and adults on the sidelines. Also remember the coaches don't get rich coaching they do it for the joy. "

" So why hasn't anyone taken this info to the front office. They need to know bout this all of this this is going to distroy the kids love for football at Wasilla. It has to stopped parents need to stop this. I think nelson is the D coodinator what does that tell you about his coaching ability. He sucks and needs to go. "

Warrior Watcher wrote on Aug 25, 2009 7:58 PM:

" "They need varsity players" you need to get your facts correct Shetter did not leave because of his ego. It goes further than that. Just say he is still removing the knives put in his back by Nelson. There is a lot more to the story than that.
Also how many teams have a number of varisty players from 2 years ago. Sorry but that just shows your ignorance on this subject.
if someone digs hard enough they will get the correct facts. Trust me they will find a lot things wrong. "

Warrior Watcher wrote on Aug 25, 2009 4:31 PM:

" The players had to run the circuit for the loss to Juneau. I have talked to a number of kids and they said that is why they were told they had to do it, because they lost the game.

The school should also look into the recent road trip. Kids were told not to bring snacks and if they did if they did not meet Nelson's standard they would not be allowed ont he bus. Some kids were afraid to bring any because of fear of punishment if they brought the wrong things. "

They need varsity players wrote on Aug 25, 2009 1:14 PM:

" Your last coach left for one main reason. He had an ego, and coaching this season would have been hard to shallow. You have maybe 4 to 5 Varsity level players on this years team. They are nice kids that work hard, but Mayo and Christiansen would struggle working with the lack of talent Wasilla has this year. Some years the talent is not there. Losing makes everyone complain. Only 3 to 4 of this years team played with the Wasilla team of 2 years ago and know what winning was like at Wasilla. "

Interested Observer wrote on Aug 25, 2009 4:46 AM:

" Wasilla gets rid of their offensive coodinator after a week 1 shutout and proceeds to not score against Juneau and only manages a kick return for a TD against North Pole. Maybe it wasn't the offensive coordinator's fault for the losses. Maybe the defense needs to step up and make plays? The defense has given up 147 points in 3 games. Kind of hard to win when you can't keep the other team out of the end zone. Was the promotion of Coach Nelson the best for the program or should there have been a search for a viable candidate? "

Football fan wrote on Aug 25, 2009 4:31 AM:

" Are you kidding me so much for this being for the kids. So Nelson makes them run a circuit if the paper interviews them. that is a joke. That is a coach that want all the attention on him its all about nelson. With him in there i don't see wasilla going any where. I can't believe that the front office allows this. "

Former Wasilla football dad wrote on Aug 24, 2009 10:32 PM:

" If it is true that players are punished for talking to the newspaper the coach should be fired. When my kids played for Wasilla it was exciting to see their name in the newspaper WIN OR LOSS. Wasilla High School and the Frontiersman needs to figure out if these things said are true. "

The next 3 weeks will be less painful wrote on Aug 24, 2009 12:46 PM:

" Wasilla may win a game or two in the next 3 weeks. They play a really weak team, one like them and one a little better, but not a great team. Then they will get clobbered by Palmer and Colony in week 7 and 8. "

warrior watcher wrote on Aug 24, 2009 8:23 AM:

" Nope not true on the up/downs... they were told they would have to run the circuit as it is called by Coach Nelson. "

Football fan wrote on Aug 23, 2009 8:22 PM:

" I have never seen a team that couldn't compete at a varsity level like Wasilla. I have notice that none of the kids get interviewed by the paper. I heard that if they get their name in the paper they have to do up downs. is that true? "
