Start thinking conservation now for winter

Matanuska Electric Association and other utilities in the state are warning people that electric outages are a real possibility this winter when demand goes up. Rolling outages may be part of our future.

The culprit is a lack of natural gas.

MEA officials say there were two near misses last winter and the availability of gas this year isn’t any better. So we can hope for a mild winter, or we can start getting used to making sacrifices.

Turning down the thermostat and putting on a sweater is the most obvious choice. A good way to save is to install a thermostat with a timer that automatically lowers the heat when you are at work or asleep.

Another is turning off lights when they aren’t needed. Those curly bulbs are coming down in price and use about one-third of a regular bulb and last far longer.

There are many more tips.

Close the doors on rooms that aren’t being used so you are only heating the part of the house that is occupied.

Pull up the shades on south-facing windows and let the sun do warming. Then at night cover the windows with shades to keep heat in. Sealing windows with plastic wrap also helps keep the cold out and heat in.

Consider cooking more with a microwave oven. It may take some practice, but a microwave is far more efficient than an oven or stove.

Wash clothes in cold water and large loads. Most garments clean just as well in cold water and that pays dividends by not using the hot water heater.

Take showers rather than baths. To go a step further, take a Navy shower. Described by howstuffworks.com like this: In order to conserve fresh water on-board ship, sailors stand in the shower, get wet, shut off the shower, soap up, and then turn the shower back on to rinse off.

There are lots more information on the Internet to help people conserve energy. With fall in the air, this is a good time to rehearse for winter. Taking steps now will help you get rid of some bad habits and make energy conservation second nature when the temperatures turn subzero.

If these attempts to be more energy efficient seem inconvenient, think about how inconvenient it will be to go hours without electricity in December. Businesses will have to close. No TV, computer, DVD or video games. And the plumbing will freeze. That’s inconvenient.

" whenever I come across those who throw around dehumanizing labels like "tree huggers" or "loser environmentalists" it usually means that they can't express their views by documenting with facts or being able to create an intelligent cohesive argument. Words are important and they are powerful. I came here to get information but instead found hatred. "

" Invest in backup batteries for computers and other appliances. Put a freezer in a varment proof unheated shed, keep several gallons of water on hand, lots of flashlights, headlights, dog collar lights (they make them) , propane for the grill.
Candles - for a safer place to burn them use a small aquarium filed 2-3 inces with sand or gravel . We have gas heat and stove so we're set for heat. "

" How crazy is it that we are sitting on a huge lake of methane gas just waiting to be tapped while we look forward to brownouts and blackouts.

    Ummmm....whose fault is that?

Oh yeah, Freinds of Mat-Su! "

" If we could harvest all of the energy finger pointers and hot air blowers spend on blaming someone else for energy problems here I am certain we could deal with the situations we are facing. Heck, for those of you so busy spewing crap about it being someone else's fault; you folks could just burn the dung your tossing around. Here's a great conservative idea. How about taking your energy and doing something positive instead of just spewing crap about how wrong every body else is. "

" Dennis please take your meds dude "anti human forces" get real. The answer at least for more gas is the north slope. The answer to getting the gas to market is to elect new legislators who are not owned by the engery companies. Its way past time for our legislators to do something about getting alaska gas to the people of alaska. I've lived up here for over 36 years if you don't prepare for alaska's winters you shouldn't be living here. "

" Thank you Friends of Mat Su for stopping construction of a coal generation plant. Instead,we now face a loss of enough natural gas for heat and electricity this winter. It is time to stop sending gas from Cook Inlet to the Orient and take care of Alaskans. Let's also start work NOW on a bullet line from the North Slope to tap the 26,000,000 000+mf natural gas reserves there. Until then stock up wool socks and hand warmers. "

" You know, this is about the biggest crock I have heard in a long time. The loser environmentalists did screw things up, but the idiots at MEA are using it and holding it over our heads. How long would it have been for a coal power plant to be online. Would us voting it in have had it online for saving us this winter. NO, it is them trying to scare us. First time my power goes off due to "rolling" power outages, they better have answers!! I am sure everyone on the board will be changed out immediately!!! "

" "The culprit is a lack of natural gas."

Not even close, Frontiersman, the culprit is a corrupt MEA board working in league with radical anti-human forces in the environmental movement who have conspired in a phony climate hoax involving a trace atmospheric gas that has no effect whatsoever on earths climate.

There is no excuse for this quandry. We have a 1000 years of cheap clean energy right under our feet, and who is standing in the way of it's use?

Clean up the Borough this October, and next year, clean up MEA. "

I for one am looking forward to our next election - there will be change!! I'll be the last to conserve so that Marathon and others can maximize profit overseas. Time to start revolting!!! "

" Congratulations to the Environmental Movement: no gas, no coal, no nuclear power, just woolly ideas like wear another sweater.
The minute the gas shuts off, I will be stuffing free coal and wood into my wood stove, and running a genset off some used oil and bunker fuel. Oh yeah, I got some old RR ties and treated lumber for 'reserve' fuel. Don't forget, tire shavings can be used as fuel too, and beluga blubber. "

Sam wrote on Sep 1, 2009 9:02 AM:

" This really is the future folks. Start practicing now. Fuel will become scarce, populations will increase. Demand up, supply down. A perfect recipe for blackouts.
Dont depend on others to keep your family warm and safe. Establish ways to heat your home yourself with kerosene stoves or generators with enough fuel for a day or two. Have food at the ready that can be eaten with little or no heating and water in reserve for when the well pump does not run.

A little preperation is worth it ! "

" It was to happen. all the signs were there, but the treehuggers in the Assembly prevailed and MEA
was denied the opportunity to expand the fuel source for power in the valley.
Now we will have power problems and not unexpected either. If there was only a way for them tol suffer this poor decision more than the rest of us.
Another example of why they should be voted OUT ASAP!
We can not have an expanding economic base without power ! "
