Reported beating ups the ante in local crime

Published on Thursday, September 10, 2009 7:49 PM AKDT

A disturbing call come in Tuesday from a woman who said her 51-year-old brother had been badly beaten by a group of teenagers while waiting at the bus stop with his 8-year-old daughter. Apparently the victim had asked the teens to slow down and they came out of their car throwing punches.

The state troopers are looking into it and with any luck, these kids will get an adult dose of justice.

Asking young people to slow down, particularly where children are at bus stops shouldn’t warrant a beating. All won’t be known until the criminal reports are finished.

Regardless, the kind of behavior described to the Frontiersman is nothing less than chilling.

You would think that one of that bunch of outlaws might have second thoughts about the attack and it wouldn’t have taken place. A more typical response would be a few choice words and perhaps a few hand gestures.

Maybe we shouldn’t be surprised anymore regarding the kind of crime that goes on in the Valley these days. Maybe we can all just chalk it up to growth. Maybe we’re just calloused to it. But doesn’t the beating sound more like an inner city or town run by a cartel of some kind?

That kind of passivity shouldn’t be the way here. We need to be proactive.

Granted, the troopers have their hands full with all kinds of nefarious doings around here, but beating a man for a slight admonishment? At what point does that thrill get old and these boneheads decide they need to take it step further and someone is killed?

This has all the sounds of a pack of feral dogs running loose in a neighborhood.

The victim who was beaten refused to talk to the Frontiersman because, he said, the case is under investigation. That’s a reasonable response. Or was he afraid of retribution by the teens? Like the man who complained about ATV renegades, and later his U.S. flag was cut from its pole.

If readers have information about the beatings, you should contact the troopers so these hooligans can be hauled in. If these guys go to school, there should be rumors going around and students should have their ears to the ground.

However the information comes forward, these pre-adult goons need some undivided attention.

" In Alaska, where many exercise their 2nd Amendment right, it sure seems stupid to jump out of a car to assault somebody (seems stupid under any circumstances, actually). Be interesting to see the fallout if/when a group of teens bails out of a car to attempt to assault a man with his child and end up getting shot for the effort. "

If he doesn't want rehab and continues to offend, lock him up and keep him away from my neighborhood. Because most steal to support their habit and since we pay one way or the other I prefer them locked up safely away from my grandchildren and yours. I think a 3 strikes your in for life is too liberal. Get clean and stay clean, and you are welcome in my community. Just my two cents. "

Being let out with still their addiction. No job.No money. No help. With the only thought of the big celebration party when they get out.Its like one Big Merrygoround. And all on taxpayers money. When will the community wake up. The majority of incarations are drug related.Drug rehabs are now backed up with waiting list. And no help with their addictions while jailed. So what are we going to do community. "

Idiots! They managed not to eliminate themselves from the gene pool today, but it is only a matter of time. Their parents should be very worried. They were all riding in an older model K5 piece of junk K5 Blazer. "

A lot of people are very curious about the who, what, where and why of this story. I guess we will have to wait until these teens are committing crimes as adults to get a full story. Teens committing adult crimes should be named and prosecuted as adults. "

Not only did they not call me back, but they still have the few items they did recover from the p*wn shop as "evidence" in their posession, charges apparently aren't being filed even though the person that p*wned the items is a known drug addict, the p*wn shops make you buy back your own items. Its quite a racket. Citizens have no place to turn. "

" To Parents: That is the problem. The government has taken away every right a parent has to raise their kids. You cant slap your kid for telling you to shut up or spank them for not listening to you without someone reporting you to child services.

The kids these days have the power to be raised how they want. All it takes is a phone call from the kid saying they were hit by their parents and then you have to prove your inocent. "

We are not advocating violence, but self defense. And there is a big difference. The parents of those teens would be well advised to teach them about what might happen to them if they persist in attacking innocent people. "

" Parents are to blame for this. These kids are doing just what they were taught. (nothing/ they set their own rules) I hate to say it, but with moms working all the time, this is what you get. If moms were at home, they'd at the very least be aggravated by their kid's behaviors enough to at least tell them to knock it off from time to time while they are little. By the time they'd reach teenage status, they might have heard enough to not think about getting into trouble like this. "

That is quirky and not dangerous. This violence can ruin your reputation as a lovely place to visit. So I'd say, definitely hand these thugs in if you know who they are. They are damaging everyone in Alaska. Should I visit Canada instead?
