Duhamel, Doyle best for school board

To the editor:

The children of this community deserve a school board that is committed to providing the best possible education to each and every student. The future of our community rests with the students of our district. It is common knowledge that communities with quality educational opportunities attract families that are committed to building a stronger, safer community.

Having independent thinkers serving on the school board is essential. They cannot be the voice of organized employee groups nor should they be the voice of campaign contributors from outside our community who have no vested interest in the education of our students. We need to stop electing board members whose sole purpose for serving on the board is their future political aspirations. Our students should not be “stepping stones” for someone’s self-interest. And we need school board members with strong ethics.

What a wonderful opportunity we have to elect some folks who have proven that children come first. Jamey Duhamel is a true advocate for children. Her experience as a three-year volunteer with the district budget process has given her an insight to impact of dwindling revenues and escalating labor costs. Bob Doyle is another candidate who would serve the district well. As chief school administrator, he worked to lower class sizes, provide more offerings and opportunities for all students, and focused on safe learning environments. Under his administration we saw great things happening in the classroom.

The Mat-Su School District needs to be known for the outstanding achievements of our students and staff. The students deserve the best we can offer. I urge you to vote for school board candidates who believe in our students.
