As a social worker for the state, a full-time student at UAA, and a mother of two, Kerri Whittecar could not be busier. But for her daughter’s 13th birthday she saved up enough money to take her kids on vacation to Disney World in Orlando Fla. “You know, my kids have never been any where besides North Dakota and Alaska and I wanted them to the see the beach and get out,” said the California native.
“We did the whole scene at Disney World, went to Magic Kingdom, road the rides, and all the theme parks. My kids loved it.”

“My mother tried 25 years ago and didn’t make it. So I really wanted to get on,” Whittecar said. I called two months before the trip to make sure I had tickets for the show, she said.
Her prior preparation almost did not pay off. “I arrived at 6:30 in the morning only to find out the 9 a.m. show had been sold out, so I waited for the 4 p.m. show. The ticket only gets you in line, from there you have to be selected to enter,” Whittecar said.
The producers look for the most spontaneous and vivacious people out there, so I acting like a nut the whole time, she said. She was actually dancing a jig in line and wearing a T-shirt that read, “Alaska knows the Price is Right!”
Whittecar said. “They let all the big groups of people in first and then the individuals in last, I was actually very lucky to get in.”
Her attitude sold it; she was the third person out of the first four contestants called up in the beginning of the show. “I went nuts when it happened, I was so excited.”
And then the her lucky stars started to align, “I bid 800 dollars on this hammock, one guy bid a dollar and others I don’t even remember, but the hammock was 1,000 dollars so I won!”
“On the way up to the stage I was so excited I about tackled Drew,” she added. “I played Lucky $even (Seven) and won a 2009 Hyundai Elantra!”
For those who do not know, Lucky $even is played by giving the contestant seven $1 bills, then the first digit of the car’s price is revealed. The contestant then tries to guess the next digit of the car’s price. If they guess right they retain the dollars bills, a wrong guess and the contestant loses the amount between what they guessed and what the actual number was. So for example if you guess 8 and the actual number is 5 you lose $3. Now if you have at least $1 left after all the digits are in place, you can buy the car for $1.
“Toward the end of the show, the other winners and I came out and had a chance to spin for the Showcase,” Whittecar said. “Since I won the largest price I got to spin last, everyone before me spun 75 cents so of course I spun 75 cents too. It was so weird that we all spun 75 cents.” Then luck failed her, “I had the option for a spin-off or I could respin, I choose spin-off and the first girl spun 95 cents I knew I was done.”
Whittecar said after the show was over, “I called my mom immediately and my mom was like ‘Yay!’ and of course the first thing my dad did was to get online to check the consumer reports to make sure it was a good car.”
After the phone calls, Whittecar said she went back to her hotel and told her kids what happened, “They were like ‘No way Mom! Your lying!’”
Although Whittecar did not get a chance to play for the Showcase prize, luck was still on her side, “So I called the car dealership and they said that they were out of 2009 models and that I was going to get a 2010 model instead. I get to pick my own color and everything.”
Although the car has not arrived yet, Whittecar said, “It came at a great time.”
Maybe this was in her destiny, “I always knew that if I could just get down there and get on the show I would win something.”
The show Whittecar is on, will air on Tuesday at 10 a.m. on Channel 11 (CBS).
“The Price is Right” is the longest running game show in television history and is in its 38th season. Previously hosted by Bob Parker winner of 17 Daytime Emmy Awards, the new show is hosted by Drew Carry and was nominated for a 2008 Daytime Emmy for outstanding game show and audience participation.
