You get what you vote for, if you vote at all

It seems like a long time ago, but it is just a few months since we went to the polls for a special borough mayoral election. Well, 7 percent of us did.

What a pathetic turn-out that was.

Now we get to vote again. Not just for the borough mayor again, but for a number of other borough, school and city issues.

One issue that should bring out a much higher turn-out is the sales tax proposal. It’s hard to find anybody who doesn’t have an opinion on that one. If passed, it will have a dramatic effect on the community for years to come.

The $31 million school bond package hasn’t drawn as much attention, but surely voters will want to have some say on that one as well.

Of course there are some hotly contested seats on the school board, assembly and city councils.

It’s been pretty well documented that the youth vote helped carry Barrack Obama to the presidency almost a year ago. Let’s hope that enthusiasm carries over in the local elections where the people in office have a lot to say about they way things go around here.

Older folks have always been pretty good about voting and with some of the issues on the ballot that directly effects their fixed incomes they likely will come out. If you know a senior who can’t drive to vote, give them a lift. The same with people who may be disabled.

Everyone needs to participate.

Valley residents should fill the polling places today. If you don’t know where your precinct is, see the information box on Page 1 or on our website. A link to the borough website will tell you where you can vote. The box will also remind voters who the players are and more.

The polls are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., so you can vote before work, after work or maybe at lunch.

So there’s not much reason to stay away if you are:

• 18 years old or older

• U.S. citizen

• Registered to vote at least 30 days ago

• And reside in the same place where you are registered for at least 30 days.

Remember, voting is a privilege and honor that not all get to enjoy, and many sacrificed their lives to give us the freedom to choose our representatives. We can, and should, do better than showing a dismal 7 percent voter turnout on Election Day.

" The Frontiersman is an extremely biased newspaper. The editor is a hard nosed republican and somehow other candidate's letters and submissions kept getting "lost". They also quietly denied a lot of blog comments once they got sick of all the Dunleavy backlash. Will THIS post be allowed? hmmmmm... "

" I would like to know what we would need to do to get some more public forums for the local canidates to participate in during campaigning? Now that this election is over, I have to say that if it were not for the fact that I personally know several of the canidates relying on the written statements of them and Letters to the Editors are EXTREMELY misleading. Anybody can talk a good talk when they are preparing a couple paragraph pre-thought about description of themselves. "

The newly elected official must have heard that her competition was after her because her businesses are now licensed. Go figure. "

" Frontiersman has NOT provided great coverage. They know it. The Frontiersman is aware of a story they could have broke two weeks ago about a candidate who has a business who has not had, city, borough or a state license sine the early 90's. They have not paid their city taxes since the early 90's although they still continue to run their businesses. So, why Frontiersman? Why have you chosen to control this election? You were given the facts o paper. No lawsuit here. YOu had the facts. Why?......didn't you inform.....the.....people? "

" Please get out and vote but please be aware of who you are voting for and what you are voting for. You may be voting for something you don't really want. So be informed before you mark your ballot. Think about the long term ramifications of your actions. Be smart, be informed! "

" Vote on the tax then and leave the rest of the ballot blank if that is the only issue you know anything about. That is a no brainer. I don't think I am great but do believe in using common sense. See you at the polls. "

" Just say no to SALES TAX and the big spenders running for office, you know who they are, let them know as well. Please VOTE. "

" Get off you high horse! Everyone has a right to vote. Doesn't matter how much they know of the issues. Sure it is best to educate yourself before hand but really to think that because I might not know all the issues and still vote I am being disrespectful. Come on. Maybe I don't know anything about the candidates but feel strongly about The sales tax. Your statement show how great you think you are. "

" This is a good civic minded article with one exception,"Everyone needs to participate." WRONG !! Only those who have taken the time to study the candidates, propositions and bond issues should vote. Those who really don't care enough to become educated should respect those of us who do and stay home. "
