Nominations for "Our Neighbor" profiles

Published on Wednesday, October 21, 2009 2:29 PM AKDT

The Frontiersman needs your help.

We are looking to begin the "Our Neighbor" series again. This weekly series will run short profiles of members of the community whose stories have gone untold for too long.

To do this, we need you to nominate your neighbors who do not get enough recognition for what they do, what they have done, or what they mean to the community. This is an opportunity to introduce the Valley to those people you know who make it such a unique place.

Please send nomiations to todd.disher@frontiersman.com or (907) 352-2252.

Thank you in advance for contributing to your community newspaper.

" Hey where's the beef. Please reread the article and headline. Nominations? It appears they are asking for nominations. Hey I got one. How about this Where's the beef person? "

" Where are the profiles? What a misleading headline. "

" How about a true pioneer. How about May Carter? She was a true pioneering woman for Wasilla. then let's take a look at the pioneers who settled Palmer. you know the ones who left their lives and loved ones in the states and came to Alaska to a hard life of freezing their behinds off and survival. How about them? It's not just about todays people. It's about those who made the Valley what it is today. "

" I phoned both the Chamber and the city and shared this story, neither took it on.

January of 2009 the Hjellen family celebrated their 100th anniversary for their Wasilla residency. They published a book on their trials and tribulations. Pat was Wasilla City Mayor and has been involved with the city in many other fashions. She is currently in the Wasilla Senior Center and seems to be in good health. I believe they were involved with the mining industry. They should be honored and their story should be told. "
