A mere 13 points separated the top four teams, and North Pole edged three-time defending state champion Colony by just 5.5 points to win the North/South wrestling tournament at Wasilla High School on Saturday.
“At a tournament like this, with 24 schools and 5.5 points (separating the top two teams), it means it’s going to be an exciting rest of the season,” Colony head coach Dave Booth said.

“You look at the top four — (13) points. Really, that’s one kid placing,” Booth said. “It’s going to be exciting. It’s good fuel to make us work harder, make everybody in the state work harder.”
Colony moved a trio of grapplers into the finals, and senior Eric Fan, a defending state champion, continued his domination of his weight class by pinning Wasilla’s Jake Johnson in the 215-pound final. Fan is the top-ranked 4A grappler in his class, according to the latest list compiled by the Alaska wrestling Web site akmat.org, and Johnson is ranked second.
Sam Loggins and Renn Wright also advanced to the finals for Colony.
In a bout that featured a pair of top-ranked wrestlers according to akmat.org, East Anchorage’s Schyler Moore edged Loggins 4-2. Moore is ranked first at 130, while Loggins is listed as the top wrestler at 135. Booth said Loggins will stay at 130.
“Our goal is to beat that guy,” Booth said, referring to Moore.
Kodiak’s Anthony Antonio pinned Wright in the third period to win at 285.
Cody Decker (119), Chris Frazier (140), Eric Antesberger (160) and Trent Shepersky (171) won their respective weight classes to lead North Pole to the title.
“We’re going to see them at least three more times,” Booth said of the Patriots. “It’s going to be nice to see what adjustments we make and what adjustments everybody else in the state makes.”
Colony had seven wrestlers place in the top-seven in all.
Noah Roetman (103), Charles Coisman (125), Chad Lowery (135) and Joe Fujimoto (152) each finished third.
The Knights were without a couple of their top grapplers, but Booth wasn’t ready to use that as the reason for the runner-up finish.
“That’s no excuse,” Booth said. “North Pole wrestled a very good tournament. We’ve just got to train harder.”
Colony won the North/South Junior Varsity Invitational at Colony on Saturday.
Four Wasilla wrestlers competed in the finals to lead the Warriors to a third-place finish.
Sophomores Abe Fox and Caleb Pempek each won individual titles.
In a battle of the state’s top 103-pounders, Fox — No. 1 at the 4A level — edged Zach Pleasent, of Bethel, 3-2. Fox used an escape in the third period to get past Pleasent, the top wrestler at 103 in the 1-2-3A class.
Pempek pinned Jared Thomas to win at 152. The Wasilla sophomore led Thomas 7-0 when he recorded the pin in the second period.
Tyler Adams finished second at 119. In a scary moment, Adams had to be tended to on the mat after the match was stopped as Decker tried to turn the Wasilla grappler to his back. Coaches and the team physicians tended to Adams for several minutes, but Adams was able to walk off the mat under his own power.
Cole Miller, Josh Brown and Adam Akelkok wrestled in the consolation finals for the Warriors. Miller (112) and Brown (130) finished third, while Akelkok (171) was fourth.
Chugiak’s Grant Sullivan was named the outstanding wrestler of the meet after his double-overtime victory over South’s Luke Shelley in the 145-pound final.
The two-day North/South Invitational featured a unique format. On Friday, the 24 teams wrestled in four rounds worth of duals. On Saturday, grapplers were inserted in a 24-man bracket for a single-day tournament. The format was designed to give participating wrestlers as many matches as possible.
The Colony varsity and junior varsity squads each finished 4-0 during the day of duals. The Colony varsity team beat Soldotna 75-3, Eagle River 78-0, Wasilla 48-22 and recorded a forfeit victory over East.
The Colony J.V. also beat three varsity squads. The Knights second team defeated varsity squads from Bartlett (72-12), Eagle River (65-15) and West Valley (41-40).
Chugiak, Wasilla, North Pole, Bethel, Skyview, Anchorage Christian and Kodiak each finished 3-1 in the duals.
