WASILLA — The Curtis C. Menard II Memorial Ice Arena will be hockey heaven for local pucks fans Friday night.

Teams at the prep and junior level will hit the Menard Arena ice for a special two games for the price of one promotion.

The Colony Knights and Houston Hawks start the night full of hockey with a game at 5 p.m. The Alaska Avalanche Junior A squad will host the Fairbanks Ice Dogs at 8 p.m.

Alaska forward Micah Ranum skates down the ice for the Avalanche earlier this season. Ranum'€™s old team, the Houston Hawks, will face Colony at 5 p.m. at the Curtis C. Menard II Memorial Ice Arena in Wasilla. His new squad meets Fairbanks Friday at 8 p.m. at the Menard. Fans will be admitted to both games for the price of one ticket. ROBERT DeBERRY/ Frontiersman

“It’s nice to be able to help out with the high schools,” Alaska head coach Dave Boitz said. “Hopefully it’s a good night to see a bunch of hockey.”

The special night includes a list of special admission prices. Tickets are $3 for students. Tickets for adults are $6, if purchased in advance. Tickets for adults are also $8 at the door.

Tickets can be purchased at Infusion Boutique in Palmer, Cold Stone Creamery in Wasilla or Espresso Cafe in Wasilla.

The Colony-Houston match is one of a handful games scheduled for the opening week of the prep hockey season.

The first puck drops tonight at 7 p.m. at the Palmer Ice Arena. The Palmer Moose host the Eagle River Wolves in a nonconference contest. Palmer also travels to Anchorage to play West on Friday. Wasilla also opens the season in Anchorage on Friday agianst South.

" um excuse me, i am not a parent first of all. second of all, yes, jamie was the tresurer for the 18AAA team last year, third, again YES it is the presidents responsibility to pay tournament fees, and fourth, what about Zack richards? Dylan Troisi? or Michael Hanson? no talent there? hmm interesting, i would like to know who you consider "talented" ? "

" Last year there was no one able to move up to juniors because none of them had talent. Stop crying in your dream lived through your child excuse.

If players were able to go on they must have had a reason, but last years team had little to none. Thats why !

And its the treasurers job to pay the bill, not Jamies! "

" then tell me this, why does the 18 AAA team last year pay all year for the state tournament fee, then jamie smith decides to "forget" to pay the bill so they can play in the tournament, and juts like that, their season is over, and many of them are now done with hockey, (overagers) when there are a couple that could have moved of to play hockey at a higher level? where did that money go? how was the ice bill HUGE, with 2-3 practices per week ? FIGURE IT OUT AVALANCHE ORGANIZATION. you are a cancer. "

" The Jr. team receives no funds from the comp. teams and if the kids are good enough they will have an opportunity, I have watched the comp. teams play this year and their are only two kids even close to that level and they both practice on a daily basis with the jr. team. The only funds that go to the jr. team is the equipment purchases and camps that the kids attend. Get your facts straight--ownership. "

" I agree with you 100% hockey fan. I think the Jr. team do profit off of the comp teams. Also Some Kids are given empty promises, they had enough!! and are wanting to go elsewhere to play, and it's sad because some of these kids are good "team" players. "

" It's a fact! The only real way to have any chance at a higher level of play you need to get outside Alaska. Why do you think some parents pay so much money so there kid can play on a team like the All-stars, they travel several times outside to get kid's exposed. Most parents don't have that money to waste, so there kid is over looked because they are not on a team like that. The AV'S need to keep our kid's here in Alaska!! Not just use their money to help the Jr team. "

" no its not, they are playing in the NAPHL.
that is the north american prospect hockey league, so it is exactly what they are doing. they play on the fourth best youth hockey team in colorado? lots of options there? "

No, it is not like the jr. Ave's, it's much higher. They have many more doors and options to open.
The Jr. Aves are only prospects to the Avelance. "

" I am proud of Dylans effort to come play hockey. I would however think against him returning to PHS for the season. Its not like the team is going to be any better. Why risk further injury coming back early if you havent healed from the first time. I know you are young and can heal quicker but I recommend sitting out the season if you dont want to risk permanent damage to your shoulder.

Besides with only 5 or 6 games after christmas, whats the use? Rest and watch, enjoy hockey in later years. "

" Palmer is the low school in the valley this year -because: The lost Hanson to the USHL. Reeves and Isaacs to Juniors in Colorado, Danielowski to a season injury.

I didnt say anything about the other players or the junior team other than I hope they get a chance to extend beyond our ranks. My message was a positive for hockey. Dont try to turn it into something its not.

You may want to read before you make dumb comments. They teach you to read at South? "

where is jared hansen? USHL ? im not sure but i believe hes from phs, and the youngest out of friese, ranum, and huppert. and the ushl is the better league without a question. 90% D-1 scholarship rate?
before you make dumb comments, think. "

" Hockey Local, you really should go to a game if your asking questions like this. There is kids from all over on this team. Yes we have the local boys like Friese, Huppert, Smith, Haider etc .

Thats how it should be. Why send local talent outside when we have a team and they just happent to be pretty darn good this year.

Instead of making comments with no knowledge. Go check out a game. Buy a program and read it........... "

" High school hockey and Jr Hockey. Great combination for the valley. I am glad the season is starting again. We have some great players and teams out here in the valley. Sorry to see Palmer take the low end this year. Good luck to Colony and Wasilla. They have the best chance in region for this year.

I hope more of the valley kids get chances to continue their desire for hockey at higher levels. The Avalanche program is a good start for them. Way to go!
See ya at the rinks! "

To be honest with you the Jr. Avalanche program is the only program with a Midget program in the Valley. "
